The visitor center is a great place to start your visit to the refuge - information, many displays, an auditorium for programs, nice restrooms and helpful staff. An amazing place. We were fortunate to be able to go during peak birding time. The main attraction were the Whooping Cranes, we saw 8 of the beautiful birds. There were also thousands of sandhill cranes and various species of ducks.

It is free! Nice small picnic area and a small museum with a movie; variety of walking trails and an overlook; different things to see at different times of the year; great place to take school groups, scouts, and for families and couples who enjoy being outside

In the fall this refuge is amazing. Whooping cranes along with many other bird species are spotted. A ranger or volunteer is present in the visitor's center to answer questions and give help to visitors.

Stop at the visitors center. The museum of local wildlife entertains the kids, short walk to the observatory where all kinds of waterfowl are visible in season. Take a short hike down the boardwalk trail. Fishing area and additional hiking trails across the highway.
