The French Concession feels like an entirely different city from the bund/pudong areas. It is a lot more quiet, less crowded and more easily walkable which is nice. The neighborhood has small streets and lots of greenery between old French style buildings containing local restaurants and shops. Definitely one of the most interesting places in the world to see just... More

This area of Shanghai is noted for its leafy tree-lined avenues and less modern architecture. Although there are areas which have succombed to the city building boom of recent decades, there are still plenty of areas which make for a pleasant walk, with opportunities to stop at coffee shops and boulangeries/patisseries for a drink and a snack. We passed an... More

If you like upmarket and overpriced cafes/restaurants then you'll love it here. However, I would recommend you find what's known as the French Concession West which is about a 20 min walk away, you'll get lost in the maze of street markets, shops, cafes, food - everything! You'll stay for hours and won't be disappointed.

We loved walking the streets among the trees. There are gorgeous little shops and cafes that are more quirky and trendy. The French Concession has lots of students and young professionals in the area. It is nice to escape the main busy roads for a peaceful stroll.

The Former French Concession or FFC is a nice place with European architecture. Almost all the shops, restaurants, cafes or bars have some french names. It's a pleasant place.

I think this is the nicest area in Shanghai. Lots of narrow streets full of shops. Ideal place to walk for a couple of hours

have abundance of choices of different cuisines. The former french concession is characterized by small houses and narrow streets. Enjoyed the most from my trip at this gorgeous area!

Expected so much more. Yes the buildings are nice but they look brand new. Whatever character was here is long gone. Full of people taking photos impossible to walk around and enjoy. Frustrating. Lots of expensive restaurants. Free wifi

Staying in Xintiandi

Neighbourhood Profile
Xintiandi
The refurbishment of a block of old shikumen into a carless entertainment center called Xintiandi, filled with restaurants, shops and bars, turned this area below South Huangpi Road into one of Shanghai’s most fashionable areas. Luxe condos house people who can afford the high-end brands that fill the malls and shops along Madang Road. The pleasant Taipinghu Park provides the area with green space and is also home to Shanghai Fashion Week twice a year. It’s not all glitter and glamour, though, as the rise of Danshui Road has given the Xintiandi area a shot of toned-down character. Small bars and cafes, mostly owned by locals, have people hanging out in a formerly quiet, unassuming part of the neighborhood.
