The hands-on dumpling tour is a must-do if you love xiao long bao (soup dumplings), guo tie (pot stickers), and wontons, and sheng jian bao (pan fried dumplings), any other dumpling like varieties, or food in general. Jamie was our guide and was amazing. She is very considerate about dietary needs and asks at least twice to make sure you... More

A friend and I went on the Untour Dumpling Delights tour in Shanghai and it was incredible. The tour took place in the lovely French Concession area of the city. We visited several dumpling shops, all serving slightly different styles of dumplings. We ended our tour at a Chinese cooking school where we learned to make dumplings. The whole experience... More

The tour is expensive but because of health safety and language if you are going to eat street food you should take this tour first.

My wife and I recently did both the Breakfast Tour and the Night Market tour. The Night Market tour is the more popular tour, but Shanghai (and China in general) has some great breakfast foods, so we wanted to give that a shot too. The breakfast tour was fun and easy-going. We had the the pleasure of being with Jamie... More

Highly recommended, especially if you are short on time and want to have a great eating experience. Giulia our Shanghai-based Sicilian guide was friendly, knowledgeable and really ensured that we all had a fun time. I will be back for more tours!

I participated in this tour on the very first morning after my arrival to Shanghai the previous evening. Jamie, one of the owners, was our tour guide for the few hour tour. She had a great and accommodating attitude, and she definitely knew her subject matter. We sampled a large variety of street food, which was delicious and plentiful. Besides... More

Thanks so much for writing a review, Jimmy! We are so glad you enjoyed the food and meeting one of our co-founders on your breakfast tour. Massages are our favorite post-tour activity, so we're glad you were able to experience them and then go eat more at Old Jesse. Hope the rest of your trip was amazing! More

This tour was fantastic and our tour guide, Jasmin was so welcoming, informative and fun to be with. The food (and there was lots of it) was all very tasty and helped us to choose food for the remainder of our time in Shanghai. I would highly recommend the tour for anyone wanting to know more about the food in... More

I wasn't sure what to expect. I anticipated a cheesy touristy experience—but was pleasantly surprised with a fun-filled evening of food with cool people. Chelsea, our guide, pushed us beyond our comfort zones while providing cool insights about traditions and food. I'm doing this again!

Hey Brian - so glad you had a fun-filled evening! We try to stay as far away from the cheesy tourist experience when we travel too - so that's exactly what we try to do here as well. Can't wait to eat with you again! More

I am extremely glad I decided to take the night market food tour with Untour. Chelsea was a great host. She had a fantastic personality, engaged with everyone in the group and seemed to really enjoy her job. She made it feel like we were just a group of friends going out to eat. The places we went to all... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
