A nice location set-up perfectly for visitors and for artists. Clean, simple, and easy to navigate. Lovely book store on the 2nd floor. Interesting saltwater fish tank,. Several types of art to choose from. Framing options galore. The other building has "things" and is worth a walk thru. There is a gallery on site. Plenty of places to eat across the street. A nice afternoon "thing to do". Your length of time will depend on how many shops are open.

No longer a ‘street’. Located on the first floor of a building undergoing refurbishment (Sept 2018). At the point of my visit there was construction scaffolding up and it was even cordoned off but inside it was business as usual. A lot of shops with paintings and resident painters, where you can haggle about prices on items that catch your fancy. Probably only worth a visit if you are looking to buy paintings.

the government moved the painters shops into the second floor of an ugly old mall next door and installed high end foreign interior design stores instead. not worth it

We went there as our friends wanted to pick up something that will remind them of China. We ended up picking 2 ourselves - it's a good place if you want to get a replica made or just pick something for your home.

We didn't end up seeing most of it as it was closed for spring break , but still had enough shops to spend an hour. Worth a visit if you live in Shanghai

As the name says, "Painter's Street" (written in English at the entrance of the street which is fully pedestrian), is solely composed of painting shops. In most of them you will see the painter producing live in the shop or in the street. You will find almost any style you can think of from traditional Chinese style to Impressionism going into abstract and portrait. Some of the shops have galleries in the malls around so do not fear walking with them there if you like the production of a particular shop. As in most places in China, you will not be urged to buy and will feel at ease if you decide to "think it over".
A few good things to know when you go there with the will to buy a frame (like we did):
- most production there is reproduction work. Very few shops with original art but there are some, especially at the back end of the street if you enter the small "lanes" that seem obscure but become sometimes amazing as you enter the little shops (some are actually huge once you past the little front desk as they have other floors you climb up into).
- every price is negotiable BUT painters are artists, even in China. If the price is too low, they will just stop the bargain. I figured you can down to -25% of the original price. You can also bargain a little more if you take multiple frames.
- some shops do orders. Do you want a specific painting in a different size? Have you seen one painting you like you want reproduced? You like a painting but want to change the colors? They can almost do anything. Just be aware that they are copyist so, as good as some of them are, there will always be a difference between the original and the copy you buy.

Enjoy the experience.

Read about this in Time Out Shanghai and decided to give it a look.
Located on a small street off Wending Lu opposite a hotel it was an interesting morning. A range of styles and sizes, framed and unframed gave us a bit to look at. Most artists have galleries upstairs and I felt no pressure to buy which was nice.
If you are organised and have time, they will copy photos to canvas for you. Quality did look good enough for my wife who bought two small pictures.

True, this painters street is smaller and more expensive than others you might find in China. I won't add to the (largely accurate) comments of others. Bigger picture, this area is evolving into the hub of overall home decoration within Shanghai. I revisited the street about ~4 years ago; it continues to develop. Starting from the Line 4 Shanghai Indoor Stadium metro stop, there are some fun shops on Caoxi N Road (e.g. #820). Turn left onto Yuede Road, and there will be a few more furniture / decoration shops before arriving at the painter street. South of the painter street there are various upscale home decoration stores. We walked toward the Line 9 Yishan Road metro stop to finish our visit. Lots to see.

I have been a few times to the painter village in Shenzhen,... So this street is mini and expensive compared to that one. I find the paintings that they have ready are often just OK. However we have got several paintings made there and those turned out great! So but mixed feeling about this place!

My friend, who has lived in Shanghai for a year, had heard of Painters Street from others, but had never managed to get there. So during my recent visit we made of point of checking it out. The lane is not that long, but we managed to spend about an hour there, partly because a lady from one of the shops showed us around 4 floors of artwork in the adjacent building. Aside from the repetition of some pieces and the apparent invasion by copies of Van Gogh’s Irises, it was the original art that we most enjoyed and had they not all been on stretched canvas, I’d have bought at least one home. We saw a few artists busy at their easels and you can speak with them to discuss what you may like produced. My friend took a card from artist, whose work made me smile and I may yet order something to be posted to Australia.
