This was definitely a taste of the local culture if you're looking for one. We walked into a busy market of crickets, maggots (YUCK!), birds, turtles, and more in a crowded space with many stalls and vendors. It was definitely interesting to wander around and take a look at everything. They had puppies and some other furry animal that looked a bit like a chinchilla. (I am not sure what they do with them...) That to say, worth a visit if you're interested in seeing something local. I was glad we went.

The insects in the title of the market is what made me want to go and look around. There are plants, flowers, birds, turtles, bunnies and kittens, I even saw a few places selling Chipmunks. There are fish also and cages and tanks for everything already mentioned. However the stand out item here are the insects mainly the crickets, there are several different sizes and colors of crickets and the insects are singing all the time I have video I recorded for the sound of their songs. There are places selling worms for the birds and there are many sizes of cricket cages here, metal, bamboo and plastic. I have been to China five times and I have not seen this before. This place is off the beaten path. But, it is easy to get to take Laoximen subway stop on line 8. When you get the street level go to Xizang road and go north.

This place is Crazy!! It is crowded with people rudely pushing past you to get ahead. The air is filled with the sounds of thousands of trapped grasshoppers and many birds. We saw so many different animals for sale as pets, such as squirrels, chipmunks, and Giant snails. There were also many plants for sale and lots of jewelry. If you are not good with crowds and shoving, avoid this place, otherwise it was an interesting attraction worth seeing. With all the crowds, keep an eye on your money and phone, I could see pick-pockets being very successful here!

Sights, sounds and odors galore, at this pet shop. I happens to be in area that connects other sights of interest, so you might just as well spend 15 minutes walking thru this unusual market.

The actual place is called Wan Shang Hua Niao Shi Chang 万商花鸟市场417 Xizang S Rd, Huangpu, Shanghai, China. Use Baidu map for more accurate location if u understand chinese. We went there to experience the unique pets culture, especially the crickets sales! Walking thru the stalls selling crickets is as if the meadow or plantation is right beside u! There r many sales of plants n other usual pets too! We even saw a mini piggy for sale! Amazing that all the plants n pets stalls r located in the same location. Our teenagers absolutely loved the experiences n doesnt wanna leave this place!

Yes, there are many strange things for foreigners here - birds, tortoises, plants, antiques (faked?) but the main reason you would want to come here is for the crickets. Cricket culture transcends generations of Chinese history and this is one unique place to experience this Chinese cricket culture. Tip : Before your trip, read up on Chinese cricket culture, watch the videos on YouTube and you will appreciate better why they do what they do in this market. Then squat beside some customers and enjoy the banter between the seller and buyer. Hint : The Chinese buy crickets either for their songs or for fights. I suspect it's the former in the market.

My mistake : I went there blind - oh, there's this Bird and Flower market - let's go see it. Then started wondering why there were so many cricket sellers and buyers. Why on earth would anyone want to buy crickets? It was only after the visit that I Googled the cricket culture to much regret. If only I had known earlier, my trip would have been all that much more meaningful.

By the way, in Google Maps, the Bird & Flower Market is reflected as 万商花鸟市场 (Wan Shang Hua Niao Shi Chang ie Wan Shang Bird & Flower Market).

This marker us a must when visiting Shanghai. Lots of birds, turtles, fish, flowers and of course crickets.
The treatment of animals is definitely questionable but it is the part of the local culture.
Definitely worth visiting!

This is a very fun place to visit. It’s a very unique experience. It’s not your typical touristy stop. It is a local market where they sell small animals, more crickets than you can even imagine, plants and flowered and many other interesting things. Definitely take your time to walk up and down the aisles exploring the market.

This market would definitely be on my must-see list in this city. It's a glimpse into 'old Shanghai' and the walls of plants and crickets are both beautiful and really exciting. I'll forewarn that if you're squeamish about bugs or animals in small cages, give this one a miss.

When exploring the market, don't just come wide-eyed taking photos and then leave. Look around, ask questions, and buy a little bracelet or cricket cage as a souvenir.

While the market itself isin't that big, there are a lot of other things in the neighboorhood worth seeing too: there's a huge indoor tea market around the corner and a great Xiao Long bao places a few blocks away.
