About
Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center (formerly Rescate Animal Zoo Ave) is a non-profit that has been rescuing wildlife for over 30 years. While educating the public about local wildlife, this rescue center and sanctuary also breeds endangered species for release to the wild. They have reintroduced several different species to previously extinct areas of Costa Rica and their current Scarlet Macaw breeding program plans to reintroduce a further 500 of the species by 2030. Every admission fee to the sanctuary goes to supporting their cause.

    Must see!
I came later in today around 3 and got a ticket with no line. The lady was very nice. I had plenty of time to walk through the entire rescue so 2 hours was plenty of time. I’m not sure if it’s typical for this time of the year but there weren’t many people blocking my view or making it difficult to walk through the rescue. If you want to eating at the restaurant, you may want to plan to be there for several hours. The trails were easy to walk and flat. All the animals/birds had lots of space and seemed very well taken care of. I would recommend to people of all ages!

Highly recommend! Eduardo is amazing, and they care about the animals.
Amazing place! Eduardo was so knowledgeable and his passion for animals/birds really showed. As he said, this isn't a zoo, the goal is to release the animals back to nature so you know they are doing what is best for the animals. Really lovely experience. We also ate at the restaurant and the food was delicious. Highly recommend!

    Definitely Worth the Visit!
This is a don't miss, especially if you have kids with you. Nothing like seeing large iguanas casually strolling by to get one excited. Many birds, reptiles, mammals - all being cared for in a beautiful, garden-like park. It is well worth your time to visit. We especially loved seeing the bats in a natural habitat doing their batty thing. And the spiders were huge! Look for their webs.

An excellent visit and lengthy tour of a very important animal rescue facility.
We took the tour of about 3 hours. Eduardo was very knowledgeable and gave us the history of how many of the animals came to the rescue center. He explained which could be released into the wild and what many of the reasons for others to have to remain in fairly roomy enclosures. Lots of birds, monkeys and a few cats. I have never had such a good guide for an extra Naive tour. There were about eight of us on the tour and he answered all our questions. Really worthwhile and worth the taxi rade from downtown San Jose.

    Very well done!
Lots to see! Well maintained and easy walk through to see all the birds and animals - highly recommend! The cats are impressive - everything is well labeled. Walk inside the huge stand of bamboo and take a picture! Not crowded at all when we were there.

Beautiful habitat for the rescued wildlife.
We really enjoyed our guided tour with the very knowledgeable Eduardo. If we had not done a guided tour we would have missed a lot. It’s a beautiful place but due to the natural habitat it is difficult to see or find the animals & having a guide really helped.

    Amazing experience, awesome guide
Our visit was an amazing experience, possibly the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. Our guide was highly knowledgable about both the animals and the flora. A fascinating story about everything. The histories of some of the birds and animals were painful to hear, but with happy endings, in that they wind up in the rescue center. The centre tells a lot about the people and the culture and the values of Costa Rica which several years ago banned zoos outright. a very positive and enjoyable experience in every respect.

    Amazing experience!
A lush tropical landscape for battered animals , who are doomed to stay in captivity because of different mistreatment by humans …sad. But on the other side a very impressive amount of animals reintroduced into the wild!! Especially a great job on the macawpopulation in CR! This and more we have learned at the fantastic tour with Eduardo! We even feel more comfortable now to encounter the jungle animals in our planned trip. We had a great lunch! Eduardo, thank you very much! We loved it!
Thank you for your visit and we are happy to hear that you were able to learn about our conservation effort with Eduardo!

    Great immersive tour of Rescate
What a fantastic tour and fabulous rescue! We had a wonderful 3 hr in-depth tour with Eduardo who is a wealth of information. So great to see how well the animals are cared for and how much the property aims to keep the enclosures like wild as much as possible. In fact a highlight was how the wild and captive animals mixed together on the very large property. We would highly recommend a visit if you love animals and want to support their great work

    Amazing!
Eduardo was our guide and was able to locate birds and animals that we never would have seen, as well as being a wealth of information. He knew all the background (often unfortunate) stories on how the animals arrived at the center, and reiterated how to be a good ambassador for the creatures we share our world with. I cannot say enough kind things about Eduardo! The center itself was amazing! It is refreshing to see animals living in an environment in which they will flourish, if they cannot be released into their natural habitats. Well worth the money for the tour, a must see!

Zoo Ave refers to a zoological aviary, primarily birds. There are some small species represented as week. These wonderful people rescue and rehab these magnificent tropical creatures. There are some monkeys, cats and lizards. Near the airport and across the street from my hotel, it was a must see for me. Well presented.

This place is absolutely amazing. I loved every bit of it. The animals that are held there are ones that will stay due to health issues or other reasons that prevent them from being released back into the wild. The enclosures the animals were kept in are so well done and fit specifically to each animal. You can tell they are taken very good care of. There is a animal hospital on site, but you don't get to see the animals there as they plan to release those back into the wild. The animals were so beautiful and so up-close. Peacocks run wild through the park and so do many lizards. We didn't get a pass to skip a line. We just showed up and got our ticket at the desk. It was not busy at all. We actually decided to stay in Alajuela instead of San Jose just to visit this place. Definitely worth a visit!

Rescue center was a last minute trip for husband and I. Only took us 2 hours to go through the entire park, but we were able to view (sometimes up close!) the wildlife of CR. Lizards, birds, “cats” and other large species were all enclosed. Informative cards and clean facility is worth a quick stop for the day.

I did the guided tour to the Wildlife Rescue Center which is only 5 dollars more than the general admission ticket. It was definitely worth it since our guide Amy knew a lot about the animals, the tasks of the rescue center, the facilities of the center and how to find the animals. It is really interesting and informative to go to the center! You get a lot more aware of wildlife and what (not) to do with animals you find on the street.

Rescate was a great place to start our family trip in Costa Rica! We took a tour and are so glad we did-- it truly enhances the experience. Our guide explained their work in detail and helped locate animals in their enclosures. She told us the animals' stories and why they can't be released. She took the time to answer questions. Many people were just walking through the facility looking at animals; we had a far richer experience for just $15 more per ticket. We later went to a much smaller rescue in another part of Costa Rica; it was nice, but Rescate was a more meaningful experience.

The rescue center that really puts animal needs first, educating public about importance of release side and breeding endangered species. I appreciate how enclosures are designed to provide animals with welfare and the whole place look like the real jungle. Friendly stuff, very nice atmosphere, I’m looking forward to come back.

It was hard to see them living years in tiny cells. They charge tourists $30 but locals $10.... Nuts

I'm not sure many of these animals would prefer to live in such captive, small areas and most are alone.

Thank you for taking your time to review, but we can see by the pictures that you posted that you unfortunately did not visit Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center. We are happy to invite you to visit and see the difference in the two places. Rescate Wildlife is actually the largest wildlife Rescue Center in Costa Rica, with the only wildlife hospital in the country. We pride ourselves in our high success rate for re-release, our endangered species breeding program, as well as our 2 private reserves that we have as release sites. We hope that you can come and visit and see for yourself :)

We enjoyed walking around the Rescue Center learning about the animals. As always and similarly with zoo centers - cages seem way too small so it's a bit heartbreaking to watch larger animals such as mountain lion running around the cage in circles. But the area of the Rescue Center is very well maintained, clean, the jungle tamed just enough to look like a nice garden. Beautiful flowering plants add a lot of charm. We saw amazing blue-crowned motmot, owls and macaws and many other birds, lovely. Large iguanas crossed the paths as well as regal peacock.
We purchased tickets at the gate ($10) without any line. Clean, well equipped toilets were available along with hand sanitizer and bottled water to drink. Decent size parking lot. A very nice easy experience.

This rescue centre (formerly know as Zoo Ave) is really well done and very much morth a visit. The animals and birds have big cages and can hide if they want, and it seems all very animal friendly. You can easily spend 2 hours there or more, as its pretty big and its nice to have enough time to try to spot all the animals. It was a great way for me to end 5 weeks in Costa Rica, and to see macaws, spider monkeys, parrots etc. one more time. And I also saw a tapir, which I hadnt seen in the wild.

The rescue centre is also great for families. And the restaurant there is quite nice, I had a very tasty cascado with fish for 2900 colones.

This was a wonderful experience from start to finish. We arrived early at their 9:00 a.m. opening and we finished all the trails (paved) by noon in time for a late brunch in the very pleasant on-site restaurant. I had the gallo pinto with scrambled eggs and my wife had the huevos rancheros. Both were excellent and surpassed many of our meals in the Atenas area. Don't miss this one if you are nearby!
