The metal church is currently being repainted. Need completion. It is still open for mass. Unfortunately no English speaking Mass.

The Cathedral has been refurbished and the surrounding park has been upgraded. Easier to walk around.

The church is at the center of this bustling downtown area of Grecia. Shops and restaurants all around.

Lovely from the outside. We could not see the inside as it was locked up after Sunday mass. Maybe next time.

Good reason for that! It's made of steel. Can't slack on the maintenance there. Beautiful clean church on the outside as well as on the inside.I like the long and wide interior. I checked the interior pillers and they were steel to. Very interesting to see.

The Catedral de la Mercedes is the central point in Grecia. There are stories about it having been shipped to Costa Rica in error, and was really supposed to have been shipped to the country Greece. Stories abound, but the fact is it is probably the largest All steel church in the world. It must have taken great effort to get it to Grecia in the Central Valley from the port on the Pacific coast. Inside is quite unique as well and the ceiling lights/chandelliers are spectacular. When in Grecia, you can't miss this church which is complimented by the central park gathering spot. Beautiful city. I plan to retire there.

A very attractive Cathedral. Very decorative inside. When we were there there were people dressed in costumes with very large heads.

The church is made of metal, as you've probably read from other reviews, but it's actually even cooler than that sounds once you see it in person! The park in front of the church is also charming and a nice place to sit down for a spell and/or eat some ice cream. There are fast-food places and cafes on the side streets, but a lot of them weren't open on the Sunday afternoon that we went there.

The story goes that the original cathedral burned to the ground in the mid 19th century, so parishioners rebuilt using pre-fabricated steel plates purchased in Belgium. The rust-red church is completely made of these plates with white filigree decorative elements.

The interior is whitewashed which enhances the feeling of spaciousness. The white marble main altar is stunning. Many shrines and statues are objects of devotion for the faithful here. Overall, the cathedral is simply decorated and there is a sense of peace here. It doesn't take too long to visit. Enjoy!

Almost in the Center of Grecia city in Costa Rica, this church is pretty much the reference point to go anywhere 😊 for example if you asked someone "where is the market" they would say " 200 meters south and 200 east" FROM THE CHURCH. The design and beauty of the church is incredible. It is open everyday and sometimes closed the evening and you could go to the church service whenever you want.
