This short but killer hike is well worth the payoff. How often to you get to swim in an old volcano? The trail is very well marked and takes around 2 hours for a fit individual to get to the top. For a rule of thumb, if it takes you 30 minutes to get to the snack shack on the... More

Be prepared, this is one hell of a hike!! Also not the easiest to actually find! 2.5 hour up, 2 hours down and it's not just up hill, but climbing up using rope, it's muddy, in the hot hot rainforest. However when you get to the top drenched with sweat the view of the green lagoon and volcano is excellent.... More

I hiked Cerro Chato through a Bike Arenal tour. Was great to have transportation to and from included plus a guide but it is definitely not necessary. Some friends even walked the 2-3 miles from our hostel to the trailhead, hiked, then hitchhiked back. Four hours round trip of strenuous, muddy hiking. Trail is very obvious. Definitely swim in the... More

We started the Cerro Chato hike from this hotel. You pay a fee and sign in at reception. There was an outdoor shower which came in really handy after the hike as we were so muddy. There's even a little bar on the hiking trail just before you get into the dense forest.

This is one hell of a climb to undertake and I'm sure if you don't mind a serious, dangerous uphill struggle it will be worth the views on a clear day usually during the dry season. It baffles me that there are no warnings in the ticket office and in fact they actually sell children's tickets. There's no way anyone... More

Great, challenging hike up steep and rather muddy trail. We went with a guide who greatly enhanced the experience with his knowledge of history and plants. Spotted many exotic birds as well but really the hike is the thing. Despite approaching retirement age, we are a fit couple and if you enjoy a good sweat, this is highly recommended. The... More

Me and my GF started the hike early in the morning in the late of april and we came back around 5 hours later. Estimated time up is around 2-2.5 hours, down 1 - 1.5 hours and you will need some extra time if you are going down to the lagoon after have reached the top. (Observe, these figures are... More

Amazing hike. Some things to know - we went in April at the end of the dry season so the trail was dry, not muddy, and thus very clearly marked and there was no need for a guide. It was a hard hike, we started sweating early on and that continued, but it was no where near impossible! Just steep... More

We did the Cerro Chatto trail starting from the green lagoon lodge. This hike can be challenging if you are not a regular hicking person but you just have to take your time. It took us 1 hour and 50 minutes to get to the top and went straight down to the lagoon. WOW, even if you think the water... More

$10 per person to hike up to the 1992 Lava Rocks. This is a easy hike only taking 1 hour. There are a few view points once you reach the Lava Rocks. You can now go back down or take the 2 hr hike up to Cerro Chato ( Chato Volcano, 1,140M ) . It is a gruelling, muddy and... More
