If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

I read reviews before we went to Costa Rica so I knew it would be busy on the weekend, so I had this on my itinerary for Monday. We happened to drive by on the weekend so I had my wife and cousin hop out...More

There is something magical about parking and taking a quick jaunt off the side of the road to encounter an amazing and totally free geothermally heated river. It is an easy trek, and the surroundings are gorgeous. We generally ended our days of trekking around...More

You park on the road outside of Tabacon Spa, which seems kind of sketchy, especially because a man will approach and say he will watch the car and show you where to go. However, it ended up working out beautifully. We gave him a small...More

We went with a few friends and their young kids (5 and under) at the end of May and had a great time. If you are an overly cautious person, I wouldn't bring your kids. It's not dangerous, but you will have to climb over...More

I was happy when my GF said she'd rather do this than go to an overpriced hot springs resort. I'd say this delivered! It's super easy to get to. We went around noon and it wasn't busy at all. Obvious reason would be that the...More

We took our cars and parked near Tabacon. A bridge is there, small parking lot. We walked down under bridge and walked into rushing water of the hot river. Super awesome, and free. Little "pools" all around for sitting. Little bit of trash around from...More

So yeah. This place was kinda sketch - under a bridge. Lots of garbage. But it was so worth it. The water was so beautiful and if you go down away from the crowds it's so secluded and beautiful. Be careful walking because the ground...More

It's steep and slippery, there is a small wall you have to climb over as well.

It's right across the road from Tabacon Resort. You can park at Tabacon (costs $2) and walk down to the river.

I don't think so. Most of them are in the ground of private hotels. But why would you want others? These are really nice and free.
