For such a small National park with limited experience, charging different entrance fees, 15 USD per person for non Costa Rican's in addition to the USD2 for parking fees, it is an expensive affair ( I would even say daylight robbery) for just viewing a...More

The lake is gone. We had weather, passing clouds and rain but it's rainy season now. We were warned at the gate about clouds and that it was socked in but weren't given notice about the lake being dried up. It's an ok walk along...More

This volcano has five craters, three of which are in the National Park. The main crater is super impressive, just enormous. The much photographed green lake has not existed for the last five years due to lack of rain. You can get a great view...More

Maybe I had a lot more expectations so was a little underwhelmed. Also could be due to the fact that during a prior visit, I had stayed in La Fortuna and have already done Arenal so there was not much of a novelty factor in...More

We decided to visit Irazu as Poas National Park is currently closed due to the recent eruptions. We arrived early as recommended due to the cloudiness. I have read in lots of places the best time to visit is before 10am. We were very lucky...More

One of the best volcanoes in Costa Rica, beautiful and cold place with nice views of the crater and local flora.

We took a day trip here in our rental car and had a great time on a rare clear day--it is often cloaked in the clouds. We hiked the trail that gave views of the crater. The only warning is keep in mind the elevation--the...More

Since this volcano is no longer active there is not a sulfur odor. Nice experience exploring the grounds.

We are traveling in April and our flight comes in at 10:30am. We are renting a car from Solid and are staying at Dantica Cloud Forest lodge our first two nights. I was considering heading straight to Irazu immediately after getting our car, I want to arrive at Dantica by 5:00pm! I do not want to be driving in the dark!! Hoping someone can give me some advice on whether or not that plan is realistic? is it worth the 2+ hours of extra driving? How long does it take to tour? Is it likely we'll run into traffic? Thank you for any advice!!

Hi! Would anyone know when the best time is to visit this volcano, so as to avoid clouds and ash from the Turrialba volcano? Also, would an active 75-year old woman be able to hike up to the crater? My grandma will be joining me on this visit. I'd appreciate any help.
