This small botanical garden can be visited in about an hour and is well worth a visit. It can be nicely combined with a visit to the Irazú volcano. It was established in the 1970s and pertains to the University of Costa Rica. Its focus...More
Over all, a beautiful garden and worth the trip. I was there in late July and there were enough orchids flowering for my purposes. Some nice heleconias, too.
However, virtually nothing is labeled with botanical names and there are no educational displays. The cactus garden...More
I've been to the gardens several times, and each time was very enjoyable. I love taking a quiet stroll here, enjoying the variety of flowers and also the sculptures on the grounds. This is a place children and adults can enjoy for a few hours,...More
The garden has a variety of plants that are native to Costa Rica and other places. There are many good opportunities for photos, and it is a nice quiet place to walk and explore for a bit if you have some time to kill in...More

The distance is 40 to 50 miles. The trip would not normally take very long but it depends on the traffic. If you're in a rental car street signs and traffic signs do not exist. You will need to rent a road mate or similar directional device. If you travel on Saturday or Sunday travel time will be much quicker. Trying to get through San Jose Monday through Friday is very difficult. There are a lot of buses and the traffic is very congested and the streets are very narrow.
