Very rewarding hike and a must do for those who enjoy the outdoors. We started at the observatory and finish in La Fortuna via the waterfall, it took us around 7 hrs including a 30/45 min break at the lake. We paid $10 entrance fee...More

Well, yesterday we went with the expectation to visit for second time Cerro Chato and do the challenging hike! For our surprise the two private entrance run by 2 hotels from the area told us that according to SINAC (our conservation areas control) the activity...More

I'm 12 years old, but I love to hike. Definitely a hard trail, but truly rewarding. Only real hikers should attempt Cerro Chato. The start is a medium-sort-of trail, then a harder hike among small outcroppings and tree roots. The end is especially hard, most...More

Great adventure for avid hikers. You'll need a lot of water and you should be in decent shape. I would compare to a Spartan Super. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with a cool lake swim (which you'll desperately need)! Can't imagine if it started...More

We are in our 40s and in pretty good shape and this hike was tough. At the top of the volcano, in the crater is a gorgeous green lagoon that you can swim in. It generally takes 5 to 6 hours round trip. Start early...More

We did it! I personally underestimated the hike. We started really early at the green lodge where we bought access for the area-12 dollar pp (green lodge is a litte higher than the tickets for the waterfall). The first meters are easy to walk, sure...More

We went via the Green Lagoon near the Rio La Fortuna waterfalls to gain entry to The Cerro Chato trail. We had to pay 13,000 colonies per couple to the Green Lagoon and they sent us on our way. Amazing hike, but you definitely need...More

We did the hike around 3 weeks ago and it was 44 degrees on that day which was the hottest day Costa Rica had seen in a year. The hike starts off from the end of one of the Arenal lodge trails and immediately ramps...More

We were very disappointed to find the Cherro Chato trail closed. Apparently local guides were using this as a starting point to take vistors to the top of Arenal Volcano which is dangerous. Check for opening before planning your day! Disappointing.

I did the tour, actually it was not as hard as I was expecting. Maybe because i hike a lot and difficult places. If you are not in shape or ready to get dirty don't do it.

Can anyone confirm if this trail is indeed closed? We have reservations with a tour to do this hike this week. Seemed like a reputable company.

If you're coming from the La Fortuna side, just go to the front desk at the Green Lagoon Lodge. They take payment and give you a wristband to let you access the trail. The trail head starts in the corner of their parking... More

Yes. Don't underestimate this hike. I am in good shape and an experienced hiker and I considered it a difficult trek. Worth the effort for the views from the top and the nature!
