- Mel W3 contributionsElvis is the Cave KingFantastic. Seriously up close and personal nature experience. You will get wet and dirty and that’s a part of the fun. Elvis our guide was amazing: bilingual, super knowledgeable, and showed us some extra cool areas with our small tour group. Me encantaba! Do not miss this.Visited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten December 11, 2022
- rbpenney1St. John's, Canada33 contributionsAwesome cave tour in VenadoThe Venado cave tour is a must do if visiting the La Fortuna area. It is a spelunking tour, so it is guaranteed to get you wet and dirty. Our guide, Wilmer, was excellent with us. There were only four of us on the tour, so Wilmer was able to answer all of our questions and show us a lot of detail, such as fossils, beautiful calcium stalactites, bats, and types of spiders. You don’t need to have any experience, this was a first for my wife and I. And there are choices on how difficult the tunnel you wish to take. The facilities are great with showers and a nice pool to cool off in afterwards. The meal was traditional CR and quite nice. All in all, a most awesome experience!Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten February 17, 2023
- julesd57919 contributionsIncredible family caving experience! This was an incredible adventure and our family absolutely loved it. Mauricio was our guide and he was very passionate about the caves and all the creatures in it. He was very patient with our seven year old child and very encouraging to all five of us. We saw bats, huge spiders, scorpion spiders and crabs. We crawled, climbed and squeezed through small gaps (these are optional) opening into various chambers with interesting formations. They provide showers and soap afterwards too, so don’t worry about getting dirty. One of the highlights of our trip and incredibly good value!Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten April 12, 2023
- Ken E34 contributionsUnique caving experience, some right crawls.Great experience, some very tight squeezes, and wet crawls, so unusual as cave tours go. Our guide was friendly, although English was not great, but the uniqueness of the experience more than overcame the language barrier. Suggest wearing pants, boots are not necessary if your shoes can get wet.Visited April 2023Written April 23, 2023

Our guide, Mauricio, was very knowledgeable and we had a great time. He took the time to explain everything and made sure we were safe at all times. The « birth canal » was awesome!! Wilder was a fantastic guide and kept us safe. If you have a car, book a tour with the cave owners directly and drive to the caves. The road is fine. This is a must do activity in Costa Rica!Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten August 13, 2023
- Tikitiki212Wisconsin122 contributionsGreat fun for teens! My 13 and 14 year old boys LOVED this cave tour!! I feel like this is a hidden gem in the La Fortuna area. Many people don't seem to put this on their itinerary, but it was so, so cool and fun. A real highlight of our trip. We've been to caves all around the U.S., but this immersive and interactive experience is unlike any others we've done. Climbing and traipsing through the water, being taken into "hidden passageways", only the light of a headlamp.... just incredible fun. It's a nice change of pace too from the standard rainforest walks/ hikes in the area. My 72 year old parents did this as well, and the guide was amazing with them. He was patient and helped my mom safely navigate the caves. (My parents did bypass some of the more challenging sections and waited for us, but the guide was great with personalizing the tour to the different levels in our group.) Highly recommend for adventurous kids, pre-teens or teens!!Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 30, 2023

I am an experienced caver, and still loved this tour. It offered lots of interesting options for crawling through wet tunnels are fitting through tiny holes, but the guide had alternatives for people that were not comfortable. I loved that this cave tour allowed each participant to adventure at their own comfort level. Our guide was great with the little kids, and things felt safe for the entire family. He also made sure to point things out to me and engage beyond the normal tour conversation. There are some truly spectacular formations in this cave and interesting wildlife.
Tips:
- Be sure to go in the morning. It tends to rain in the afternoon, and they will not allow tours when the water levels are high.
- Bring a complete change of clothes/shoes. There is a lot of guano, and you will need to shower well afterward.
- They will ask you to wear a mask in parts of the cave due to exposure in a bat habitat. I recommend you use one of their basic surgical masks instead of a fabric one. The mask also reminded me not to touch my face during the tour.
- The guide will offer photos, and while you can take your own (if you have a waterproof case for your phone) our guide did a great job of setting families up and lighting tough spots.
- There was gravel road for the last couple km of drive. Be careful depending on your vehicle.
- You will get wet (waist deep at points) and need to be able to crawl and climb in slippery conditions. Please know your own boundaries.

Really good. We arrived as a pair without having made a reservation and the team kindly arranged an impromptu tour with an excellent guide. We went into the caves, armed with helmet + headtorch provided and clothes that we didn’t mind getting very wet/ quite muddy + water shoes (would recommend to bring, they have boots if you don’t). Our guide spoke good English and was able to explain a lot about the history, geology (the stalagmites and tites) and most interestingly to us the zoology.
Inside the caves we saw spiders, cave crickets, catfish and several kinds of bat. The caves lead through narrow pinches, up through tunnels and through shallow waters. It was definitely an adventure, moderately physically exerting but I think they could cater for a variety of abilities/ shapes and sizes if needed. At the end there was some showers and changing facilities.
I would highly recommend, it was great fun and very authentic/ not dolled up for tourists. Thank you to the team there.

Hi-
Is it necessary to reserve at this time? I emailed the caves last week and didn't hear back; I'm a little concerned about just showing up.
Thank you for all your fabulous reviews! Looking forward to this!

Hi there. Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, you do need a reservation. I had a hard time contacting them through the booking engine on their site, as well as both email addresses they put on the site. However. I sent them a message on WhatsApp and got a reply and was able to book within 30 minutes. (The whole country really works off WhatsApp). It was definitely worth the headache booking, though. Enjoy!
My family and I are very adventurous and don’t love guided tours very much. Could we do this on our own without a guide and just pay for the entrance?

Can children come on this tour? What is the minimum age??

Not sure if a minimum age. Should be ok if they can walk well, if they don’t mind walking through water ankle to knee high, and if they are brave to go through short tunnels on hands and knees. My son was 11 and enjoyed it.

Well, depends on how long it would take you to travel to and from the caves. Our resort was an hour drive from the caves. Figure the drive back too. The cave tour took us 90 minutes but there was just 2 of us. The more people, the longer the tour. Just figure travel time to and from. It was a pretty cool trip though. Good luck

We were there in March. I'd say it was room temperature and we were comfortable in t-shirts and shorts, although I was sweating after a while from some of the hunched over walking and crawling.

So if you get nervous in tight spaces..,do you not recommend?

Our guide asked us if any of us felt claustrophobic in small spaces and assured us that even if we did we could go through the caves. Maybe they would just alter the route to avoid some tight spaces if possible - there are still plenty of big and open spaces in those caves! I would definitely still recommend going!

Hi Kristie,
We are heading to CR next week for a family vaction. Have been trying to find the "official" website to make a direct reservation but it seems to be non-existent. Would you share with me the address you used to reach out to them directly?
Thank you.

Ruth, I hope you get this message in time: we didn't make reservations, we just showed up. This is their slow season (March/April) so you'll probably be ok just showing up in the morning. I found Waze to be the most reliable way to guide myself there. Google Maps didn't work.
