- Samantha G7 contributionsBeautiful Refuge!! Disappointed that there was no food/snacks available for purchase after entering the park.Beautiful beaches, pretty drive through green fields. Saw different animals along the drive. Only disappointment, when we paid the expensive entrance fee with the clerk, he didn't mention that the restaurant was closed which we thought should have been shared. We finally had to leave the park because we were so hungry. Suggest to bring snacks or confirm prior if the restaurant is open. :)Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten October 9, 2023
- MbfiOrlando, Florida19 contributionsExcellent experience at CuruTook a tour with Eduardo through YlangYlang. Beautiful place with abundant wildlife. Our tour included a swim in the bay at the end. Wonderful. Eduardo was very knowledgeable about all of the wildlife in the park and its history as a private reserve. We saw howlers, agouti, White faced monkeys, macaw, two boa constrictors [!!], coati, iguanas, white tailed deer, and numerous lizards and birds of different types.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten January 6, 2024
- Nathalie TBristol, United Kingdom20 contributionsThis place is a mustBijou park: few visitors = wildlife to be seen. Tried a few of the larger parks with not one animal in sight (unless with guide). This park offers several tracks and we saw monkeys, iguanas, red crested woodpeckers, deer. The beach is paradise, gentle waves, clean, deserted. Perfect. Best place in CR so far.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2024
- SlidyShropshire, United Kingdom600 contributionsOur favourite place to stay in Costa RicaOutstanding place! We have spent two nights in one of the cabins every year since 2018, and still love the place. The basic cabins suit our needs well and as we have our own camp kitchen and cool box we are self sufficient, so have only once tried the restaurant (which was a very good fixed menu meal). If you are visiting Costa Rica for the wildlife, hiking, swimming in what feels like your own private bay, and privacy then this is the place for you.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten March 31, 2024
- Jackie K5 contributionsWant Nature? It's hereVarious trails to walk around; we did just over 6 kilometers of them. Saw lots of wildlife: coatis, howler monkeys, capuchins (white faced monkeys) peccaries, deer, agoutis, variety of bird. Other people we met on the trail had seen an anteater raccoon. Stayed overnight. Basic cabin with shower & washroom; bedrooms on one side and a separate kitchen on the other. Limited air flow, fans in bedrooms; no AC, so it can get hot. Great view from cabin. We ate dinner and breakfast there - good food. Took cooler with snacks & refreshments. Next day took the 3-hour horseback ride to Quesera Beach. Enjoyed our time there. I'd do it again, but take extra portable fans. Kudos to the great staff who work there.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 19, 2024
- Captain-WendleKirkby-in-Ashfield, United Kingdom186 contributionsA wonderful day outWe visited Curu on two occasions while staying in the Montezuma area of the Nicoya peninsula. We visited in the green, or rainy, season which naturally limits the amount of wildlife that is visible due to extra foliage etc, but that didnt stop us seeing three species of monkeys, Coati's, Deer, Aguti , various lizards and iguanas, along with a huge variety of birds. The paths are well maintained, and I highly recommend taking a walk up to the Mirador viewpoint as it gives a wonderful view of the stunning beach and refuge itself. All in all, it definitely makes the " must do" list if your visiting the area.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten August 24, 2024

This is a great overlooked place to visit. Our family enjoyed the day here. We saw many birds, monkeys and other wild life. There are really nice walking trails. We spent the afternoon on an almost empty beach that was in a really nice lagoon. Great for children. Our teens rented kayaks and had so much fun. They also have showers and and changing rooms.
We took a horseback ride with our family of 9 all at the same time so they can accommodate a large group which was great. They staff love the animals as we saw when 3 baby birds fell out of a nest and they ran to save them. I would recommend this place.

We did not see any animals other than 2 monkeys in the parking lot
And some deer. We heard many different kinds of birds but not able to see them.
They were making construction repairs on old wooden bridges.
The trail signs were not clear.
We went early afternoon and maybe that was siesta time for
The animals.

This place is fabulous. There is ample opportunity for birdwatching, lots of fauna, nice trails, hordebackriding and two beautiful beaches. My favorite: Curú, even over the white beach of Quesera. We did the horseback trip to Quesera which takes a little over 1 hour one way, two other trails and had the best time staying in the super basic zero frills cabins! Lots of photo opportunities!

We had planned to tour Cabo Blanco NP but our guide suggested Curu, more wildlife and easier trail. Eduardo was absolutely right, the place had a wonderful variety of wildlife. It's a pretty easy hike and plenty of shady areas as well if it's a hot day.

Unfortunately we stopped here on our way to catch the Paquera ferry so didn't have enough time to explore all of the intriguing trails. What we did see was gorgeous! Very well maintained, full of natural beauty. Also, the gift shop is really nice (OK, so we did dash through it with just enough time to buy a lovely wooden trivet).

Stopped to spend the day here while trawling the coast by boat with a wildlife expert on board. The refuge has well-maintained hiking trails and an abundance of wildlife (though I wouldn't have seen even a quarter of it here had I not hiked with someone skilled at spotting it). Coatimundi, monkeys, and deer were the large animal species we came across. The refuge seems to have a wide variety of bird species in residence. There's a nice sandy swimming beach that goes on and on. You can purchase a simple lunch.

Is the restaurant open to the public? What is on the menu? Do you know how much a taxi is from Tambor? Thank you!

I can't do boat rides...is it possible to snorkel off the main beach?
Written February 14, 2020
I agree with the opinion that you would not see much. The boat ride to Isla Tortuga is very short. I snorkeled off the beach there. I saw some fish, around the reefs off the beach.

Hi! I feel like this question might be a little off base...
We are very excited to visit the Refuge and several other stops along the way. We're trying to find an opportunity to see squirrel monkeys. I realize their habitat is more in the Central Pacific region. Are there any locations on the Nicoya peninsula that have squirrel monkeys?
Thanks!
Keely

How to get to the refuge from paquera ?? bus ??
Wich accomodation do you sugest around ??
Thanks
Written January 19, 2017
Most people go by car, but you can reach the main gate by bus (the bus going to Montezuma from the ferry pier will leave you there), From the gate they will come to pick you up (there's another 2 km or so to the refuge). I recommend to spend at least a night there (US$15 perperson/night).

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with this. I want to book the Bio-luminescent tour with Curú National Wildlife Refuge and I noticed you said it must be done in advance. Do you have a website that you booked it in? Their main website seems to have no information on it. I would really appreciate your help.

I booked it when I was there. the tour is a snorkeling tour. if you have any issues with clostophobia, you will feel very uneasy. it was a great experience and ask for Jose. he is the only one who speaks English well. I went the last week of October, during a slower time. I don't know how busy they are during peak season.

Hi Diane! Thanks for your review of Curu National Wildlife Refuge. We're heading there with our 5 kids and their spouses/partners over Christmas holidays this year and are looking forward to it. Quick question. For the entrance fee does the Refuge take credit cards or just cash?
Thanks,
Brenda
Written November 6, 2016
You can pay by credit card in the main lodge

We are near to Curu National Wlldlife Refuge from December 19-25, 2016. What are your days of opening/hours of operation during that pre-Christmas week please?
Thanks!

Hi All - My niece and I stayed in Curu a couple of years ago and liked it very much, but the cabins were really very primitive (no electricity) and generally dusty. We heard that the cabins had been upgraded, so I would like to know if that is true. Also, how do you book the night kayak tour, which sounds fantastic?
Thanks
Written May 26, 2015
The cabins now have electricity. 2020.
