Church of San Blas, Nicoya
(Templo de San Blas)
Jan. 2020 • Couples
An absolutely beautiful, if low key, church in the heart of Nicoya. There has been a church on the site since 1544. The present one is ancient, having withstood several devastating earthquakes over the centuries. It has recently been restored to its former glory, so ignore any old photos you see. The church is surrounded by the town square, an active and exciting park under the shade of trees as old as the church. Well worth a visit to Nicoya anyway, but especially to see this historic site.

Interesting old church. The was a guide there that was enthusiastic with information, tho only in spanish.
A real gem to the visit was a great little natural foods restaurant to across the street from the SW corner of the plaza.

Beautiful Church

Church has been meticulously renovated. Our friend brought us to the area because she knew we would be impressed. So very glad we were able to see the interior of this place on our short visit. Left feeling the sacredness of this very lovely building.

This very simple, well restored and very old colonial church is the architectural highlight at the heart of a calm and safe small city

Quick Stop to See the Church and Park
Apr. 2019
We made a quick stop here on our way from Samara to Liberia. A little stop to stretch the legs and see the Church. It's closed for renovations, but it was neat to see the outside. There's a cafe close buy that has great desserts.

Worth a Look

Originally built in 1644, the church of San Blas is Costa Rica’s last remaining colonial landmark. This impressive, whitewashed, mission-style rebuilt church (in 1831) is sadly closed. We couldn’t find anyone to open the church, but we later learned it is closed due to earthquake damage but should have been repaired and opened by now.

Central Park of Nicoya
Sep. 2016 • Couples
Founded in 1644 it is considered one of the oldest churches in Costa Rica. Simple but beautiful architecture (if you're into that sort of thing). Unfortunately, it's closed to the general public because of structural damage from an earthquake few years ago but they still hold special services occasionally.

In front of the church is the lovely and well tended central park of Nicoya. With its huge old trees and children's playground it is a favorite place for meeting and relaxing in the middle of the commercial center.

Church of San Blas at Nicoya church the oldest church in Costa Rica is closed for refurbishment so all you can see if you drive all the way out there is the outside of the building. There's nothing you can see on the inside of this very small Costa Rican historical church.

Antiquity in Nicoya, Cost Rica
Feb. 2014 • Couples
A beautiful ancient New World Church in the heart of Nicoya. Amazing to visit such a place with so much age.....to think this particular building predates pretty much anything of European design in North America. It was closed when we visited as they are trying to repair and restore structural damage sustained during the areas last major earthquake. Still worth a look see and right beside all the shopping spots and local restaurants. Muy Buena?
