On our multiple beach stops around costa rica, puerto viejo was our least favorite. The beach is dirty and we could not get a good meal to save our lives.

Close to restaurants and manageable waves for small children. There are a few rocky areas but mostly a sandy area.

IF you are looking for something beautiful, and for your family, I wont recomment Puerto Viejo. You can drive a couple of kilometer and get to a better place

This is a pretty beach in Puerto Viejo. It's located near restaurants and shops so it's a nice place to just hang out.

The beach here pretty but the black sand is so hot it burns your feet....literally. Waves were pretty strong and signs about riptides everywhere discouraged us from venturing too far out.

Lovely sunset views, eclectic locals, tourists and expats, with a healthy population of Rastas mixed in.
