About
The Jade Museum and of precolumbian culture is positioned as an innovative state-of-the-art cultural proposal in the protection and conservation of archaeological heritage in Central America. Located in the center of Costa Rics's capital, the building was especially constructed to house the museum's collection, its architecture evoking a cut jade block. Its five levels exhibit objects crafted by artisans specialized in solving their daily subsistence needs, their spiritual and political world.

Immerse yourself in pre-Columbian Costa Rica
This museum, also reviewed by Trip Advisor visitors under its name, Museo de Jade (ha-day), has an overwhelming collection of jade and pottery (and a few gold works) recovered from parts of Costa Rica. At first I was a bit frustrated by the volume of materials without much information, until I learned that there were supposed to be (and are) computer screens/kiosks which will tell you more; many of them were not working, but many were (I learned). In any case, soon I was immersed in the experience, as there are many informative displays, including dioramas. The "day" and "night" exhibits, and the "memories" exhibit, are stunning. I spent more time than most people (based on being "passed" many times), I was enthralled. Do allow at least a couple hours. There are quite a few activities for young people, I think it's a good family museum, overall. Spanish is of course the dominant language, but there are many signs and subtitles in English. In sum, this museum helped me realize just how complex and complete pre-Columbian Costa Rican culture was. Fascinating art and artisanry, you will make an authentic connection with these peoples.

    History Lesson
Simply put, the Jade Museum is an experience not to be missed. Every floor is a history lesson told through an incredible array and number of artifacts, displays and signage. The creative use of lighting, music and sound effects wraps everything together in a unique experience for all ages. Don’t miss this one of a kind museum.

Great Museum, loads of displays to enjoy
The Jade Museum is full of very interesting artifacts and displays. It seems to focus on educating young people; there were many school children there when we visited. They were well attended by staff. We were on our own. It is clean and well kept. This very modern building has multiple floor levels, and requires a bit of time to fully explore. It is worth a visit to see the historic use of Jade and other wealth found in Costa Rica. There is also a great deal of information about the culture of the indigenous people.

The museum is very modern and was somewhat enjoyable. I really enjoyed the art exhibit and seeing some of the ceramic pieces. That said, the price tag ($16 for tourists) and the dearth of jade (only one floor, and just a section of that floor) made this my least favorite of the 3 I visited. The anthropology stuff isn’t bad, but Pre-Columbian Gold and National Museum have better artifacts. I would also beef up the gift shop. It is extremely disappointing.

An extremely well designed building with lots of interactive exhibits. Excellent signage in English and everything was well displayed. It contains the largest collection of pre Colombian jade pieces in the Americas. Was a huge collection of pre Colombian ceramics as well. There was the general area then two others - night and day which were both well worth a look. We spent a good two hours there . Well worth the entry fee

Really interesting insights into indigenous culture. Clear, well laid out exhibits over three floors.

When we went there was also a Salvador Dali exhibition.

This is a really interesting museum. It is well laid out with lots of 3D models of early people and absolutely beautiful original jade and clay artefacts. Most of the labelling provides an English translation. There are many interactive displays which would interest children and soundscapes and video presentations

Nice museum, more about the indigenous people than jade. A huge about of pottery which was still very impressive. Felt the price was a bit steep though.

This museum was way more interesting than expected. There is information on jade but it is more about the original people that lived in Costa Rica. About how they live, wars and animals. This is great for 1,5 hours!

This is a really fun way to spend part of our afternoon! The exhibits that were on limited display were really really fun and the museum isn’t overcrowded.

This was expanded into a charming and ambitious museum of local archaeology and culture. Most of the items on display are not jade. There’s lots of context and thematic organization (war, shamanism, sexuality, animal symbolism, Mesoamerican influence). The touch screen displays for kids are pretty good, but the ones for adults are just a dry museum catalogue. As noted, lots of content in English (translation isn’t exactly fluent). See this, and visit the Mercado Central, and do the tour of the National Theater—you’ll have a sense of Costa Rica as more than an ecotourism destination. I was sad to see this museum almost empty on a weekend.

We loved this museum. From the reviews we thought it would only be a short visit but we spent 2 1/2 hours and enjoyed every minute. The building is beautiful and very unique in it's presentation. The exhibits are very well done and nearly all had English provided also. Excellent experience. Don't miss it.
