Jade Museum is unique and informational.
We loved this museum. From the reviews we thought it would only be a short visit but we spent 2 1/2 hours and enjoyed every minute. The building is beautiful and very unique in it's presentation. The exhibits are very well done and nearly all had English provided also. Excellent experience. Don't miss it.

    Beautiful museum
This is a really interesting museum. It is well laid out with lots of 3D models of early people and absolutely beautiful original jade and clay artefacts. Most of the labelling provides an English translation. There are many interactive displays which would interest children and soundscapes and video presentations

    Great museum to visit
An extremely well designed building with lots of interactive exhibits. Excellent signage in English and everything was well displayed. It contains the largest collection of pre Colombian jade pieces in the Americas. Was a huge collection of pre Colombian ceramics as well. There was the general area then two others - night and day which were both well worth a look. We spent a good two hours there . Well worth the entry fee

An interesting place for a short visit
An interesting and well ordered display of jade, pottery and other artefacts that provided a good understanding of how they were used. The visit has also given us a reasonable summary of the lives of the pre Colombian peoples. There seemed to be some repetition in the items displayed, but certainly worth a visit for an hour or two.

    Excellent and informative museum
We were looking for something interesting to do on our one day in San Jose Costa Rica and the Jade Museum was perfect. Beautifully laid out and covered multiple aspects of Costa Rican culture, not just the jade artifacts. We booked an amazing airbnb (Cando) right across the street that featured a courtyard garden and had a wonderful time.

Wonderful exhibits and info about early Costa Rica culture
We really enjoyed our visit to this wonderful museum in downtown San Jose :). While it features lots of beautiful jade artifacts and info about how these were made, there’s also a lot of well curated exhibits that describe the early cultures of Costa Rica (several additional floors of displays). Definitely recommend seeing this place while you’re in the capital city!

The museum has always been one of my favorite places to visit with friends and family in San Jose. The floors on Indigenous culture are amazing. However, they recently installed an offensive cattle ranching exhibit next to all of the exhibits on Indigenous culture. Given that cattle ranching is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity and forests, including Indigenous lands, on the planet, it seems deeply offensive to dedicate a floor to the practice within this museum. The country of Costa Rica claims that its ranching is sustainable, but of course this is impossible due to the second law of thermodynamics and the amount of methane that cattle emit. To place pro-cattle propaganda in a museum dedicated to Indigenous culture and its ties to biodiversity seems evil. I don't recommend this museum to anyone until the cattle ranching exhibit is removed.

Amazing collection of Jade and ceramics. Very intricate. Many date back over 1000 years. Wonderful displayed.. well worth the $15 fee that foreigners pay.

After reading some of the rather negative existing reviews, I was surprised to find that this museum is not just good, but quite spectacular. Perhaps some people were disappointed because the name does not give a good idea of the whole scope of the museum.

The building is quite modern, the displays are well-lit and well-explained in Spanish and English, and the collection is stunning. There are three floors (2-4) that give information about the pre-Columbian peoples of the area now called Costa Rica: their way of life, their religious beliefs, their social organization, their burial customs, and more, all illustrated with beautiful objects.

The top floor contains a large display of mostly ceramic objects from the permanent collection that are not currently incorporated into exhibitions that provide context. In a way, this was the most impressive part for me, because I was able to see so many beautiful objects representing a huge variety of functions and styles, all together in a series of tall glass-and-wood cases.

And on the ground floor, I was lucky to be able to see a temporary exhibit about the museum’s first curator, who not only studied indigenous pottery, but painted beautiful watercolors that are displayed in the temporary exhibit together with actual ceramics. It’s open until April 24, 2024, so go see it if you can!

Great museum. Interactive for kids. A bit pricey for visitors however. I recommend starting at the bottom and making your way up.

Really informative and provides great overview of precolombian history. 5 different levels each about separate things. Would recommend a translation app as majority of things are in Spanish.
