Interesting for a history buff

We enjoyed the opportunity to learn a bit of Costa Rican history. The price was reasonable and it was the National Museum.

We began out journey in the butterfly garden. It was breathtaking...and then we arrived at this amazing exhibit in the area that used to be a prison in the East Tower. Overall, the museum was very accessible as my partner uses a wheelchair. His admission was also waived because "he uses a wheelchair" that is the standard at most museums... More

The entrance through the butterfly house is fantastic. Then an interesting overview of Costa Rica's history. Maybe a couple of hours, then out through the butterfly house again. Wonderful.

The museum is housed in an attractive old fort and you walk through a butterfly house to get to it. Very nice gardens with precolumbian stonework.

Visited this museum and stayed for about 3 hours. This was long enough to see just about everything. It is in the grounds of the old fort and there is a lovely garden area on the way in filled with beautiful butterflies. It was very clean and well laid out. I think it cost us $9 each for entry. There... More

The entry to this museum was free to the public because of construction. Located in downtown San Jose, this museum is situated at the Plaza de la Democracia. This former army barracks contains historical and archaeological displays. Of greater interest to us was the enchanting "Butterfly House". We spent about an hour there taking photos. We saw more species here... More

After a white knuckle bus ride from the coast we went to the national museum in San Jose. The different size stone sphere that are unexplained were very cool. On the bus ride we stopped and saw a sloth and poison dart frogs in the jungle. Scary bus ride for sure but quite an experience.

We entered via the Butterfly Garden, lots of beautiful butterflies flitting around. Excellent displays of Costa Rica's historical development showing some wonderful ancient artefacts, but needed more time than our tour allowed to fully appreciate and digest the information. The morning we visited, the President was there opening a new section to the museum and after the inaugural ceremony he... More
