You only need to spend 5 to 10 minutes in here

Nothing especial. Get there, take a picture and keep going. The plaza is not pretty. Go to the cathedral and try to get some pictures inside (do not pay for a tour, it's not worthy!)

Worth a walk through

It was a nice center area that I’m sure is great for festival, bands, etc. There was nothing going on when we were here. Tons of pigeons!

A camera can change your perspective

If you are a regular tourist you might be very board here, but if you are a photographer there is a ton of street life to capture. Between the architecture of the buildings, local vendors / street performers, and crazy pigeons a photographer can spend several hours alone taking photos in this area.

Busy central plaza
Feb. 2020
People mill about in this plaza, a meeting place for visitors and locals and setting for the delightful National Theatre. In any other city it would have little significance but in San Jose where the city character is generally somewhat down at heel, it assumes a pivotal role.

Nothing special
Jan. 2020
Because our hotel was right next to it, we walked through and around and past this plaza several times during our stay in San Jose. Often it was crowded with people, seemingly may locals just hanging out and some tourists people watching. In the evenings, when the surrounding streets were bustling, the plaza was also. But rarely did we see any street performers or other things of interest in or near the plaza itself.

However, it is very well located, above the Gold Museum and right next to the National Theater. Basically it is a wide open slab in the midst of the action.

Nice busy plaza

Our hotel is right next to the plaza. Many people are constantly walking through the plaza. There is limited seating. It is right next to a pedestrian road.

Central Area San Jose
May 2019
There is the Theatre in front to see which is historic and then several museums close to this area. This is the best part of downtown San Jose due to the museums and attractions but compared to other Latin American capitals it is lacking.

A starting point in central San Jose

This plaza fronts the National Theatre and is a busy place. The theatre is lovely on the outside and the inside. Flanking cafes in the foyer were originally built for men on one side and women on the other. The original marble statues on the top were removed and brought inside to preserve them allowing you to see them up close. A nice place to start a walking tour of downtown.
