I stumbled upon this place while walking back to my hotel. There are lots of beautiful hand-made stuffs to buy here and take home.
I was surprised to see that prices of goods are in US $ and they are quite expensive and not within my travel budget for souvenirs. For example, small embroidered sling bags are $20! I just looked around here and did not buy a thing.
Come here for the experience but be prepared to pay high prices!

I bought a bag from here and when it got wet, the color came out and stained EVERYTHING. There was pink everywhere. When I washed the bag in my shower to try to remove the dye, it continued in bucket loads. Everything I have purchased from this market was very cheaply made and fell apart very quickly. I’d recommend the central market over this one.

Probably the most expensive market I've ever been to, every stall sells the same things, t-shirts, stuffed toys, fridge magnets and all over priced and not negotiable

If you want quality, not your average gifts/souvenirs/art this is the place. Not all vendors spoke English but easy to communicate. Prices quoted in USD but I requested to pay in colognes which was obliged.

I found this place a waste. Booth after booth of identical souvenir type things. Very little, if any, real craft.

The vendors are a little pushy but you'll find some good stuff here as there is a wide variety. Your typical Costa Rican souvenirs but also handmade local artist stuff.

We visited here when it was a little quieter, so had lots of venders focusing on us. Generally we were left alone after a 'no, gracias' but not always. It made it difficult to look at the products and a lot of things were the same - but if you persevere there are some hidden gems!

A little disappointed in the market. I was looking at more made in Costa Rica items with a lot of difference between the vendors. What I got was a lot of vendors with similar items. It was hard to find unique items (which we did), but it was hard. At least the vendors were not pushy and were nice.

I visited this market mainly to kill some time and have a look and why not, maybe even buy something if I found something nice and unique. The market was very quiet so all vendors had nothing to do and wouldn't stop talking to me even when I was saying I wasn't interested. And it's a lot of vendors, so after being nice to the first three and wasting like 15 minutes talking to them I decided I don't want to do that. All I wanted was some quiet time to observe myself but that was impossible. I had to try and avoid eye contact and rush out or I'd spend an hour there just listening to them talk and try to convince me to buy cheap, mass-produced souvenirs. I did find a couple of things I liked but the vendors were so pushy that I didn't feel like buying.

We visited this old market with a guide on a walking tour of central San Jose. It houses a large number of traders offering a huge range of products. We sampled a delicious tortilla and superb ice cream. Definitely worth a visit.

Está en la avenida 6, a un lado del parque San José, detrás de la caja de seguro social. además es una zona agradable de visitar y donde puedes ver más edificios interesantes de la ciudad.

Hi Macjrobert, My husband and I are visiting your beautiful City for the first time with our son and Grandson. can you tell me if any of the booths have pottery/ dinnerware with the beautiful colors, i am particularly interested in a large water pitcher and and individual salad/pasta bowls. There is a rumor from 2015 that the market place is being taken away. Is it still there?
