Probably one of my favourite places on the planet. Please - never change this museum. Don't upgrade it!
It truly is a wonderful treasure, and has bought me immense joy.

We went to the San Jose Museum of Natural History in June of 2021. We had been in San Jose and toured for 4 days already. My daughter and 9 year old grandson arrived and wanted to sleep in and have a quiet day. We chose this Museum to visit as my grandson loves dinosaurs. We were not disappointed! On entering the large main area we encountered a huge T. Rex!! My grandson was impressed (not easily accomplished), and this was a great spot for photos. There were impressive collections representing all the flora and fauna of Costa Rica and more. They had the most impressive Butterfly collection that I have ever seen. There were large exhibits of Birds, Monkeys, Sloths, Sea Life, Corals and much more. This is a wonderful museum that does not seem to make it to the top of most visited lists. We were able to get in easily and bought tickets at the door. Go, and you will love it!!!

this is a great place to bring kids and see a lot. If you donñt speak spanish, it might be a little tougher as they don´t haven a lot of their display in other languages, but if you just want to wander and see the animals, this is a great stop.
There are huge numbers of specimines lining the back halls. While the preservation techniques are not top notch, you can at least get to see a wide variety of birds and animals from all around the world.

Not sure where they got the animal exhibits from- the rejects from people practicing taxidermy perhaps. The animals in the main looked like they had all had really bad plastic surgery. The kangaroo was not like anything we had ever seen, it was that bad. Don't waste your time going there.

We went there on a holiday and this allowed us to enjoy it on its fullest. This museum has a vast and very well preserved collection of species and replicas (for what I understand one of the most impressive in Latin America). Is so easy to get there and it's really impressive how much you can see. Fully recommended for tourists and locals!

We were surprised to find a museum of this type in San Jose. It is not well advertised and probably not visited by many tourists. That's a shame because it offers a wealth of education with numerous rooms offering exhibits of the mammals, marine life, avian life and even dinosaurs inhabiting the region and other parts of the world. It's a wonderful place to bring children and the few that were there on our visit were really excited at what they saw. The entomology display alone encompasses 8400 items! We spent several hours and marveled at all we saw. If you're visiting San Jose, carve out some time to take in what it offers.

I went there one afternoon and was surprised that there is a museum like this in San Jose. The taxidermy is outstanding and one could spend hours in this place. Nothing is live. There is everything from butterflies to sharks along with rocks dating back to 300 A.D. You will enjoy this place and it is cheap to enter.

Just visited the museum, for teh second time. As a fossil collector, I had offered and they accepted, for me to donate some fossils when I visited San Jose again. Ongoing dental work assures me of regular visits, so I offered to bring some fossils on this current trip. The director was out, and we toured the museum and my wife loved it! I recommend this quaint, dated but interesting museum!
