It used to be an unheard of place to visit...a church? a cemetery? But a very important one..for the cemetary is in an Athabaskan village...right outside of Anchorage (25 miles) and it combines native Shamanism as well as Russian orthodoxy. The grave yard is fascinating....More

interesting melding of Russian Orthodox and Native Alaskan cultures. $5 admission, short informational tour of church with many ornate icons and cemetery with native "dollhouses" on the burial plots.

I learned a lot about the blending of the Orthodox and native religions. The decaying cemetery is intentional as the native belief is that the spirit is only on this earth a short while and then travels on to the next world....thus no longer needing...More
