About
Mendenhall Glacier is easily accessible via roads from the local airport, cruise ship terminal and state ferry terminal. Our facility and lands are managed by the federal government through the United States Forest Service. Federal passes are accepted and sold as well as daily passes. There is a visitor center with a theater showing a 15-minute film on Mendenhall Glacier, a bookstore operated by nonprofit organization Discovery Southeast, and exhibits on wildlife, history, and glacial and geological changes. Rangers provide talks at various indoor and outdoor sites in summer. Open hours in summer are daily 8am to 7:30pm. Due to wildlife and bears, no food is allowed outdoors from April-November. There is no beverage or food service available to prevent bears from becoming food-conditioned. Nearby Steep Creek is the spawning stream for wild sockeye salmon from late July through early September. Later in the fall, a run of coho salmon spawn in the creek. Porcupines can be seen foraging on leaves in deciduous trees. Beavers are visible early in the morning and in the evening. Learn about Alaska and the natural world around the glacier and lake. Enjoy a one-hour hike to 400-foot-tall Nugget Falls. Other trails lead to different habitats. In winter, the visitor center is open Friday-Sunday from 10am to 4pm and closed on federal holidays.

Hire a taxi/private tour vehicle - save some $$ off the ships
Paid for a private tour bus out of Juneau, saved $$$ by catching a private vehicle. Picked up from ship; driver came back at agreed time. Simple and convenient. Quiet little visitor centre, great walk out to falls. Nice little side trip.

Nice little Visitor centre with views of the Glacier
Visitor centre gets busy as a result of the high volume of tour groups that are brought to the glacier. Visitor centre has a small store and bathrooms as well as some exhibits. It does have an elevator for those who would struggle to walk up the ramp. Some great views of the glacier can be found within the centre.

Beautiful hike to glacier and falls
Beautiful hike to glacier and falls. Plenty of retirees made the hikes, even an elderly woman with a walker. Well worth it, to see the glacier and icebergs. Great view from visitor center and info.

See it before it is gone
We took the bus from downtown and we had only about an hour at the glacier. Unfortunately, it is a hike to see how much the glacier has retreated. The visitor center is nicely done although be prepared for no food. We took a nice hike along a trail from the visitor center which was easy to walk. We had a beautiful, sunny day which is not always the case in Juneau.

    Gem just minutes from downtown
We visited here on a beautiful, sunny day. Several easy, paved walking trails with lovely views of the glacier. Highly recommend the trail to Nugget Falls. It takes about 45 minutes in and back. Panoramic views from the visitor’s center which has a couple of spotting scopes to take a closer look at the glacier and the waterfall.

    a Juneau MUST-SEE
Our helicopter ride got cancelled due to low cloud ceiling, so we hopped on a bus for $35 and headed Mendenhall ourselves. We spent an hour and a half hiking the trails to Nugget Falls and viewpoints of the Glacier. The visitor center is small, but there's a short video and gift shop.

    Cool place to visit.
This is a must see in Juneau. The park is just cool. There is a nice flat hike to the falls. Place is clean and the staff are friendly. It is a busy place. The glacier is very cool and the view is awesome. Don't miss this. It is part of the Tongass National Forest.

    Beautiful breathtaking views with waterfall
From the ground or at highest point inside the visitor center, you can't go wrong with these breathtaking views of the glaciers, mountains & waterfall. If you're adventurous you can rent a canoe and get up really close to all. Bus driver said can be mama bear with cubs at times, but no such luck during my visit. To save money take the $2 each way city bus and walk over a mile, very doable if your in good shape, otherwise the city tour operators are so much more, but they can shave off 1/2hr of time going & coming vs the typical hour on city bus.

    Enjoyed my visit
I took the Blue Bus here and really enjoyed my visit. I noticed everyone walking up a steep ramp, but was happy I saw a sign for an elevator. That was a treat after walking 2 of the trails. I enjoyed looking around their displays and the view of the glacier from the center was nice. The small gift show had a nice selection of items.

It's been a number of years since I've been inside the Visitors Center. I usually just hike around but had my niece and nephew with us and they had not been inside. Was great to look through the high power binocular to see the sheep out on the mountain. Couldn't see them with the naked eye. Loved the short movie that was playing. I wanna see it again so I can make note of the gal that was weaving as I forgot as soon as I walked out of the theater. Hahaha! I highly recommend a visit inside if you haven't in awhile like me. A lot to see and learn

Absolutely gorgeous area. Saw a year fledgling bald eagle, no white head yet as well as about 10 other mature eagles on the drive in as well as at the location. There was a porcupine in the tree. He was a cutie. Must do for anyone there for a day or so. We took a taxi with Andy James with Juneau Taxi from the ship. He was an awesome tour guide. Cost not bad and we had a ride from the ship and back according to our schedule. Yes, you might go up into Glacier Bay and see glaciers there BUT nothing like this. You are much closer to them. Most wildlife we saw while there in October.

(Why do people go on a cruise with thousands of people, get on buses with hundreds of people to go to the same place and then give a place a bad review because there’s too many people?) This place is wonderful! While individual parking is limited, there are bathrooms just off the parking lot and also in the visitor center. There’s an elevator to the visitor center. The visitors center contains a lot of information including a movie. There’s also a gift shop. It’s an easy mile hike each way to Nugget Falls. My tip is to go off season. (There’s no entry charge. In the morning, I was the only one on the trails.) I advise calling ahead to confirm visitor center hours. The website doesn’t always have the most current information.

The short hike from the visitor center to the glacier and the waterfall was beautiful. While you cannot get all the way to the glacier, it is protected at any rate, you are right next to a short but very powerful waterfall. I hiked back and entered the visitors center where there was a lot of information and photos of the glacier over the years. I consider Mendenhall Glacier and the visitor center must see activities in Juneau.

Mendenhall is quite spectacular, do yourself a favor and catch a taxi from town to the visitor center. You have to pay extra to get them to take you all the way in. Here are the other options, 1. Catch public transportation and walk the 1.5miles to and from the center. 2. Get the taxi but not pay the entrance fee and walk 1.5 mi to and from the center 3. Take a tour/excursion bus ($50-$100 per person, princess excursion) . We chose the private taxi to and from town the total was $120 (Round trip) not bad. Doug was great, shared with us his story and all the knowledge he had of Juneau nice enough to give us his card so he can pick us up.
The visitor center & discovery southeast book store hours are 8am-730pm 7 days a week. If we planned this in advance, I would’ve added a bit of hiking. We only learned of this place through some of the locals and decided on a whim to give them a visit, we were already a bit tired from our excursion in the a.m it was around 4pm when we got here. Go, you’ll be glad to see this beautiful glacier and remember its only once in a lifetime!

You don't need a ticket of any kind to walk to see Nuggets Falls.
It's a 30-60 minutes round walk on flat area.
Very easy to walk with a wonderful view of the falls.

We spent a good amount of time in this visitor centre learning all about the glacier which was so visible from the outside. Really interesting with a 15min film explaining the history. There is a gift shop selling nice souvenirs too. Free entry.

Great bus trip from the port we booked at the port. Lots of walking to see this Glacier. And we were glad we did. Fantastic views and trails, make sure you have rain proof clothing with you and have the ability to walk on long trails. The photos I took were from a less expensive cell phone so they came out good. Totally worth the the day trip to do this.
