Absolutely gorgeous view of the waterfall. Only a 2-mile total “hike,” which isn’t really a hike so much as it is a walk on a nice, mostly flat, paved path. It was a very busy day so lots of folks out and about. Once down at the falls, there is a nice view of the glacier as well. The spray from the falls is so cold and refreshing. Really cool and memorable experience. Free!

This hike is great for hikers of all levels. A mostly-flat trail through the forest leads to a stunning waterfall that you can literally walk up to and touch. It also provides great views of the Mendenhall Glacier within a safe distance. Be aware of bears as they are more active during certain seasons.

It's right at the Mendenhall glacier, so you can see it at the same time. A slightly longer hike will get you to the base and give you a different angle view of the Mendenhall.

We walked as far as possible for being a bit tired, but found it quite easy to see the falls up close without touching it.

This is very close to Juneau area. Very good access both hiking and parking. Easy access to glacier and hiking trails. Nugget falls is a must do. Easy flat hike to get right up to the glacier and falls. We went in April and there was still some ice and snow on the trail. We didn't have spikes or crampons but was easily done with hiking boots. Absolutely amazing views and you can literally walk right up to the falls. Great views even if you don't hike. The visitors center was closed and opens end of May. Parking lot is a great, dark place to view the Northern Lights. We saw a little of the lights at around midnight.

The Mendenhall Glacier visitor’s center is a good stop before heading out to the falls/glacier. The path out to the falls is a short hike or you can venture off path like the locals do. The falls are amazing and you can get close enough to get wet! The falls are fed by glacier melt far up in the valley above. The Mendenhall Glacier is great viewing from here also.

If you are used to Hawaiian waterfalls that shoot straight down, you'll like the variety of Nugget Falls--a long diagonal slope.

Absolutely breathtaking, upclose view of Nugget Falls after an easy hike on paved trail with lush, rainforest vegetation along the way!

Can you walk from the cruise port in juneau to nugget falls

No, it is about 13 miles. You need transpo to the Visitor’s Center at Mendenhall Glacier. The falls are a very nice walk from there. You might check for a city bus or take a shore excursion.
The cruise excursions are very pricey. What is the best way to get to the Mendenhall Glacier from the dock without going through the cruise line?

I'd say either a taxi or maybe the city bus runs to the glacier.
(not sure about the bus)

Can I take a shuttle bus from the ship pier to the Mendenhall Visitors center, so I can spend as much time needed to hike several trails? I would like to spend at least 4 hours hiking.

Yeah you can take it, but you have to take it outside the cruise. Right there in the pier there some drivers that can take you over there.

what is the best way from cruise ship to get to the mendenhall visitor center

Usually the crew ship will run a tour bus. I would recommend that you rather book an excursion to canoe the Mendenhall lake and then hike the glacier in which case the tour company will pick you up right at your port. At first glance it may seem like it's an expensive option but when you actually experience the tour it will blow your mind and you will say that it was worth every single dollar.

did you take a bus here? what is the best way to get here

We paid for a ship excursion. The bus drops you off at the visitor center. You can then decide if you want to walk to the falls. There is a sign at the trailhead explaining the (paved) trail, approximate hiking time, etc. We should have done it as soon as we arrived and skipped the VC.
At the falls, you are closer to the glacier. If you have the time, it can be a leisurely walk, just don’t be late for the return bus.

How did you get to the visitors center, was it part of an excursion or is it close to the pier so you're able to walk?

You'll need some type of transportation, be it taxi, shuttle, rental car, or excursion to get to Mendenhall Glacier where Nugget Falls is. I recommend renting a car. For our party it was actually cheaper, plus we could do Mendenhall at our own pace, along with anything else we wanted to do in Juneau. Once at the glacier, it is a short walk to the visitor center and then a walk on a trail to the falls. However you go, make sure to do it!
