The fish market is not at Kovalam , it is a little further south at Vizhinjam. If you run out of things to do then the walk to Vizhinjam is about 45 minutes, with 2 interesting mosques enroute ( there is no entry to the mosques) There are plenty of tuktuks at Vizhinjam if the walk back is too much.... Visiting the fish market is a must for anyone visiting Kovalam. There is an energy that is unique only to India. You can walk amongst the locals as they go about their daily routine. You can pick up fresh fish at local prices, as long as you know how to haggle. For westerners you will be approached by people asking... More

A wonderful experience watching the boats we had seen dancing on the sea for the past few nights and then seeing the actual fishermen as people, dragging their boats onto the sand and then their wives filling their baskets with fishes of all types imaginable: squid, King fish, prawns, lobster, mackerel, vast yellow fin tuna which all then are laid... We remember having read in our school days about Kovalam beach as the best beach of India. Now Varkala beach has, perhaps got the number one position in Kerala, but Kovalam remains all time favourite, with safe sea and wide area. Plenty of good restaurants, hotels, and shops nearby. Cleanliness desires fore emphasis though

The local fishmarket at the harbour few kilometers away from the tourist beach is crowed with inhabitants: fishermen landing there catch, women selling fish, squid, crabs and it is fast transported and taken away in baskets, trays with and without ice In the hot afternoon to be cooked soon.
