Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises has been at home in Valdez and...

Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises has been at home in Valdez and Prince William Sound since 1971. Known then as North Star Marine Charters, Stan and Mary Helen Stephens operated fishing and hunting charters on their first vessel the 26 foot m/v Mary Helen. Seven year later in 1978, the entire family joined the business as Stan, Mary Helen and their three daughters operated their first tour to Columbia Glacier on board the m/v Vince Peede. At this time the company changed it name to Stan Stephens Charters, Inc., and to Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises in 2003.

Between 1987 and today Stan, Mary Helen, their daughters and extended family (also know as co-workers) have worked to develop their operations and increased awareness of Valdez and the Sound amongst travelers. During this time the company has operated a variety of tour boats between the three larger communities of Prince William Sound; Valdez, Whittier and Cordova. In addition to operating cruises, Stan Stephens Cruises also operated Growler Island Wilderness camp located just south of Columbia Glacier for 15 years.

On Good Friday 1989, life for the residents of Prince William Sound changed when the Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef. Stan's vessels were some of the first to carry response observers to the site. Due to the need for spill research, the Stephens's purchased two additional boats. It was the early days of the spill as Stan was observing the response that he dedicated the remainder of his life to working with industry to protect Prince William Sound. Today, the crew at Stan Stephens Cruises lives by Stan's example and works to share the corner of Alaska he worked so hard to protect.

Since 1971 the vessels and tours that Stan Stephens Glacier & Wildlife Cruises have operated have changed, but the one thing that has not changed is their commitment to the customer and the company's long term dedication to the Valdez and Prince William Sound.

We recently took the Stan Stevens Meares Glacier Cruise out of Valdez. What a delightful trip. The boat was comfortable, food and drinks were adequate and the captain and staff were knowledegable and friendly. When some significant feature was in sight, the boat would be halted or slowed down and even turned around for a better view. During the trip,... More

We did the Columbia Glacier Cruise on a Sunday. and had a fabulous day on the water. Staff very friendly and commentary from the captain was excellent. It was all very informal and we could stand right beside the captain who answered any questions we asked. We saw plenty of sea lions and puffins and the boat spent a good... More

Cruised from Whittier, AK to Valdez, AK on a sunny and gorgeous day. Not much wildlife to be seen, unfortunately, but the cruise was spectacular anyway. All staff were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We took a side trip to Meares glacier to see it close up and were not disappointed as it calved several times while we were there. Dinner... More

Won a cruise at our local fair's silent auction, so FINALLY got to get on board with the Stan Stephens crew. Agree with Jack L about the wheelchair access; one of the heads on board will accommodate a wheelchair patron with ease, so don't deny yourself a trip. A note on food; the short tour is 6 hours, and they... More

We cruised to Columbia Glacier and had a fabulous day on the water. Staff very friendly and commentary from the captain was excellent. The catamaran spent an hour just 1/4 mile from the face of Colombia Glacier. Lunch on board was great and the complimentary coffee throughout the day was an added bonus.

Had a wonderful time on this day cruise. My husband was seasick on the first cruise we took to see the fjords. This cruise was much calmer and the Captain made special effort to not hit the waves head-on; hence a much more enjoyable trip. We were able to walk on deck and view the animals, the glaciers, and the... More

We took the glacier cruise and spent all day in the water. The weather was fantastic and so was the crew. They made every effort to show us all the great things Alaska has to offer. Whales, otters, Eagles, everything was AWSOME....and the views...indescribable. This is a bucket list item for sure.

No fear of getting chilled...there's heating in the boat. Accommodations were comfortable and very clean. Plenty of opportunity to stand outside and take in the spectacular sights! Food was very good and plentiful. The crew was knowledgeable and helpful! The Captain's commentary was educational and entertaining. The wildlife and glaciers were spectacular! Would definitely recommend this trip! Well worth the... More

We took the all day Mears Glacier tour which was nothing short of outstanding and well worth the price. Additionally, they took excellent care of my wheel chair confined wife. They even had a wench and pulley system worked out push a wheel chair up and down the sometimes steep ramp to the boat necessary due to changing tides. They... More
