SAMREC is Port Elizabeth's new marine bird rehabilitation and education centre situated in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. The centre's purpose isn't just to rescue and rehabilitate, but to also inform and educate the public through their different programs.Tour our marine rehab and education centre and experience nature through sight, sound and touch.Visitors can experience the hospital and see the volunteers in action helping to save our environment, in particular the endangered African Penguin.

We found this by accident but so glad that we went. It is a small rescue centre, manned mostly by friendly and enthusiastic volunteers. You can get very close to the penguins and feeding time was worth waiting for.

Went as a family and enjoyed every minute. The volunteers were amazing ! One does not expect to get anything to eat.. however, we were served delicious toasted sandwiches ! Thank you guys... we will be back.

We spent an hour or so with the guide at SAMREC viewing the Penguins, Gannets a Cormorant, a Heron etc and also looking around at the various exhibits and where the birds are cared for when they are brought in injured from the beaches etc....More

Small Rescue Center with interesting information. Better to drive there or take a Uber/Taxi. You can find postcards and books in the place. Admission fee is 30 Rand (adults). It's an opportunity to see penguins if you don't get the chance to do a boat...More
