Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Africa- the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa's leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women's Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multi-purpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

I highly recommend anyone staying in Johannesburg for a few days to visit the area. It is a stop on the route of the HopOn-HopOff bus which makes it easily accessible. Anyone can walk into the constitutional court which, apart from its importance is an exceptional building with very interesting artifacts inside. The visit of the jail is a must.... More

Please visit the place. One always just think about Robben Island and forget that Apartheid left its scars all over the country. The cells and treatment of women in prisons leaves a tear in the eye. Visiting this place one's eyes are opened to how badly women were treated in the cities during apartheid. Very well preserved and displays are... More

Constitution Hill always sounded like such a boring place to visit, because who want to know about the sufferings of prisoners in the Apartheid era? We are so passed that, right? Well, i must say that visiting this place was such a valuable learning experience. It is not just about the prison where Mr. Mandela was first imprisoned, but about... More

Constitution Hill, by its natural characteristics is not very accessible to disabled individuals, though an effort has been made to allow for wheelchair access to the main sites. This is an experience that allows the visitor to imagine the horrors and cruelty indivisuals were subjected to under apartheid, and when one moves from the incarceration site tothe Constitutional Court, one... Dear Manuel P, Thank you for your visit to the site and for sharing your experience. Indeed as you have mentioned, the site from its original architecture was not easily accessible for people with disabilities. We have however been taken great strides to make it more universally accessible, by installing ramps and lifts for people with disabilities. We will be... More

Interesting site juxtaposing the jail where most of the anti-apartheid fighters were imprisoned with today's Constitutional Court (= South Africa's Supreme Court). Both are historical objectives worth seeing!

This former prison reveals the terrible treatment afforded to African prisonners both common criminials and political prisonners by the former governments.

It seems to be the year of oppression for us having visited the Killing Fields and S22 prison in Cambodia in October and now Constitution Hill – I suppose at least with this one there was a positive ending Visited on a Saturday morning in March 2017 – got a discount for being older – the museum is informative and... You can walk around free of charge at the complex. There's a paid guided visit that lasts roughly one hour (and another one, rarer, that lasts for two hours). We did the highlights one when visiting. It was very informative and interesting.

Many have fought for the freedoms of SA and many continue to carry it on. So important to see where these brave men and women were imprisoned and abused.
