Coming in was the only issue, the Uber driver wanted to drop me off outside the main gate, and he actually stopped in the middle of a gang of animated "porters", some with trolleys, some shady characters around as well, I quickly told him to enter and that I would pay the 15 Rand!
It was fine inside as I just went straight to the check in queue and then onto the bus.
This was at 6am

It seems that the issue with this place is the outside, as soon as you are it is largely considered to be safe. I was very nervous due to the various reviews but did not face any issues. Go during the day only! Either take the train directly inside or ask your taxi/ Uber driver to take you to the drop spot (might cost another 15 rand) that way you avoid having to walk in front of the station.

The bus station has scheduled trips to most of the destinations in Southern Africa. It's a busy place. I took a trip twice from the bus depot. During my first time, I called Uber to take me to my hotel. When I got out of the entrance, some men asked if they can help me carry my bags. I politely refused. They got very persistent to the point that one of them was pulling my hand-carried bag. A fellow passenger helped me out and warned me that most of those guys are thieves and should not let them carry your stuff at any cost. When I called my Uber driver, he told me that the taxi drivers block Uber drivers from picking up passengers at the station because they want to force the passengers to take the very expensive taxis. I asked helped from security personnel who asked me for a tip for just giving information. I ended up walking one block the street to meet with my Uber Driver. The second time, I went outside the bus station to grab something to eat and walk a little bit. It was around 1:00 PM. After I ate, I was on my way back to the station when an attack happened. I got choked from behind by two guys and as I was resisting three more guys came and mugged me. I'm sure there were other people watching but nobody helped even when I woke up with blood on my face and lost my wallet, cell phone, and my bag. Worse, some bystanders told me not to tell the police because nothing will happen anyway. I still reported the incident to the police but they were not very helpful. I continued my trip to Zimbabwe the next day and swear that I will never go back to Park Station. I have been everywhere in South Africa and Johannesburg is the most dangerous area I traveled.

If you travel with public transport Park Station is difficult to avoid. Both train and bus stations are located here under the same roof. Taxis, Bolt and Uber pick up and drop off passengers. Taxi Rank Noord is an adjacent station for transport with microbuses to Lesotho, Swaziland and other destinations not served by the big (unreliable) bus companies.
WARNING
Do not venture outside the main hall unless you have pre-arranged transport close to an exit (e.g. Rissik street, not Market street). Especially the market area at the southside of the station is very dangerous, also during the day when there are lots of people. I was assaulted two blocks from the station by criminals and robbed of my cellphone and money. Disregarding a mild concussion and bruises, the psychological impact can be traumatic.
Micro buses (also called taxibuses) that arrive at Taxi Rank Noord do not always drop you off inside the compound, but just on the street. Go inside a shop and order a (uber or bolt) taxi from there. There is a safe passage way (staircase) between the Taxi Rank Noord compound and the main hall of Park Station. Ask a driver, do not accept 'help' from someone who is just hanging around.
Do not expect any help from authorities like the police or tourist information services. I visited Park Station many times, the tourist information booths were always closed. Police is hardly visible and when you approach them, they make the impression to want to get rid of you asap. Perhaps a tourist police unit like in Bogota or Rio could improve the situation.
Fourth draft, three earlier versions censored by Tripadvisor.

As any other station in the world, Park Station is just a place to come and go, but they have a nice range of restaurants and services in it. Be aware of the surroundings. It is not a safe place.

I had not been to the old station for many years but needed to go for business this week. My first concern going into the CBD was there going to be safe parking for my car, well I was pleasantly surprised there is plenty of open parking with lots of security guards around so you feel very safe. (you enter the parking from Rissik St but if you are coming from the North go down Harrison St turn left into Plein St and second left into Rissik St and you will avoid most of the CBD) The main concourse was very busy with lots of people moving around ,it is lined with lots of shops and fast food outlets (some open 24 hours) This area was very clean and there were a lot of security guards and police around but you know you are in the CBD when the sign at the entrance bans the caring of AK47 ,tomahawks ,daggers and spears. To the south of the station there are lots of street vendors but I would be very careful of the area to the East as I don't think it is very safe for tourists. There are lots of porters around if you need any help with baggage. The toilets are not the best I have seen (but by no means the worst) and there is a chap handing out lengths of toilet paper as you go in so no margin for error. Although I did not go as far to look at it the Gautrain station is on the Northern side which gives you fast access to Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.

Having read all about this place I was very nervous of going there to take our train journey. I took some previous advice from trip advisor to go in at Rissik St entrance which we did (although the taxi was going to another entrance)
It was quiet and our taxi driver took us right to the lounge so we had no problem whatsoever.

I had to ride a train from the Brakpan station nearly a month and a half ago and I was the only white on board the train not only that, when I arrived at Park station , I was harrased by to blacks pretending to be guys who worked at the station,I found myself playing this game, count the white, not a very good game, I further more went and sat at a KFC and when I needed mother nature I went to toilets out side of KFC because KFC don't possess toilets, went and when I came back to my laggage it was still there but hence this woman whom worked there warned me, infuther you need mother nature take everything with you because there are way too many totsies here, that's the message a white boy like me got, I inturn will never travel on a train in JHB again.

I am coming from CT on the Shosholoza Meyl, arriving Joburg at 11:45 a weekday, and have a train connection to Port Elisabeth at 13:15 same day. What is reasonable transfer time in the Park station? Will I make it? Is it difficult to find your way? Thanks, someone?

I will be coming from Capetown to Johannesburg on the Shosholoza Meyl ,will need to get to the International Airport to fly back to Australia ,can I catch a train from the station to the airport journey j thomson

Surely do. You could take the Gautrain from Johannesburg Park Station heading towards Pretoria, then you need to change at Marlboro. ( I am not so sure if they do have a direct train service from Johannesburg train station to O.R. Tambo International Airport)

Looking for a Hotel close to the Park Station. Must have its own shuttle service (not Uber) able to collect us on arrival with Shosholoza Meyl.
