Recommended but fails to live up to this. The food once again is OK, the salads are atrocious - an explosion of lettuce with little else

Unlike Soweto, this is not a tourist area - so here you see the real thing. It is also poorer than the more well known Soweto. Before going to Johannesburg, I got tons of warnings which all said different variations of "whatever you do, don't go to Alexandra". Supposedly it was the most dangerous place in the supposedly dangerous city... More

Alex is a large township situated right next to Sandton, the financial capital of South Africa (and Africa). There is no reason to go to Alex. You can drive through it on London Road and it is a safe and well lit road but prone to pot holes and police checks.

Due to the not-too-good stories my colleagues and I had heard, we wanted to feel and experience Alexandra! We dressed up as locals with some well known funky 'thug' hats and bounced around THE Place :-)! Shopped around while taking in the views! We had a nice time there. Though we were a bit scared of course :-)!

My wife, son, and I, went on a tour of Alexandra Township in June, 2014, on a tour arranged by my son, from reviews he read on Trip Advisor. Our tour guide was Jeffrey, who lives in the township. He picked us up at the Gautrain train station and then we took the walking tour instead of the bicycle tour.... More

Its hard to put a overall rating for this township, on onehand its so poor that they have the Alexandra cultural area (mandela house and a huge empty building) not shown with no signage what so ever. Yet on the overhand you get to see how people lived 25 years ago before Apartheid ended. Area is easy to get too,... More

I do not even know why this would show on trip advisor. Do not go there this is one of the worst part of towns, and there is nothing to see

The main shopping areas in Alex has been upgraded fairly recently.. such as around Pan Africa Mall, near the taxi rank. But the traffic congestion in this area, is a free for all, no one obeys traffic lights, & pedestrians just cross the road, not even looking at on coming traffic...scary, especially on Friday evenings...from 3-8pm....!! Roads agency needs to... More
