I went with friends and family expecting a guided tour of the iron age sites only to find that every other Sunday they do a 10km 3hour hike through the whole area. At first we were a little disappointed but ended up exhausted and exillerated. There are three areas to this vast inner city space. We were escorted at all... More

Entrance could be more advertised. Interesting artifacts at the top. Lovely view. Notice boards full of interesting information. Not for the elderly as quite steep.

From the top of Melville Koppies, you can see all of Johannesburg. When you descend into the valley, the city disappears. It is hard to believe such peace exists in the heart of this 24/7 metropolis. The sudden absence of the city is not the only surprise Melville Koppies holds. If you thought the history of Johannesburg began with the... More

There are two kinds of hikes, one is a cross-koppies hike which covers more distance with one break. The other is a guided tour which is informative with time to stop and ask questions. The schedule is on their website. Wendy and David are both extremely knowledgeable and look after their group who meet on a Sunday morning. You need... More

Just like to point out the address you have advertised on your page that it is no longer DF MALAN it is now Beyers Naude Drive for the Melville Koppies

We decided to go for a hike . We ended up at the MK . It wasn't much of a hike rather more a strenuous walk in the hills . The view from the top was spectacular . There are 3 different walks we went on the MK west the easiest of 3 I believe . It was nice to... More

If you need some time out and are not looking for a strenuous hike, Melville Koppies is a good option for a Sunday morning. The panoramic views are spectacular. The area is safe and the guides Wendy and David Carsten are very passionate and knowledgeable. Check the calendar on the website to see whether you want to take part in... More

It's true, Joburg is not beautiful but if you are visiting make a trip to Melville Koppies and climb the pretty little hill. You will get a really good panoramic view of the city in all directions, while the butterflies fly about you, it's very safe and there is a super coffeeshop in the centre of the small, leafy suburb... Melville Koppies are open to the public only occasionally. But they are worth a visit. The walks are peaceful and safe. The Koppies are right in the heart of suburban Emmarentia and Melville and form a lovely get away from iit all scene. Tere are the remains of old iron age foundries to be explored as well as a wealth... More
