It's hard to say why this street was called Long. It is as long as the parallel Loop Street, Bree Street and Queen Victoria. It is equally difficult to say why it was singled out as a landmark, and not the neighboring Loop street. It still has the same cafes, souvenir shops and just shops, Probably it's a matter of a critical mass of hostels for backpackers, who provided it with a critical mass of reviews.

On my recent trip to Cape Town I used the Turkish baths after my long flight over. It was a relaxing experience, not the most upmarket bath house I have been to, but was lovely to unwind. The attendant is very helpful, many will make you an iced tea for R10 total bargain.
They provide towels, and a small private bedroom for you to change and relax in between baths/ hot rooms.
There is two steam rooms, a sauna and a large open hot room, as well as a cold plunge pool.
As mentioned it is quite grundy, the crowd is very mixed all races, and nudity is allowed although not many locals are in the buff. Otherwise enjoyable for a cheap R95 experience to unwind

whether you are a tourist or local, by yourself or with a group of friends - you will always be approached by persistent drug dealers offering you just about anything!
a few great bars/pubs are spoiled by the numerous drug dealers all over Long Street!
further to this - some start asking you questions about your clothing (i.e. shoe size!?) - making it even more uncomfortable.
especially after having a couple of drinks and walking back to your vehicle - be very careful, alert and aware of your surroundings!

I am a Capetonian who was recently pickpocketed in Long Street by Nigerians.. if anyone asks you about your shoe size or wants to compare your shoe size to theirs while you walk along the sidewalks.. they will pickpocket you. Stop it before it is too late. Everyone that reads this, please inform anyone coming to Cape Town and spread this message as far as possible. This has to stop and the more awareness that is created the safer people will be.

Was once one of the best fun loving streets to visit . Have some good pubs and hangouts .But while walking to your destination you are constantly accosted by guys from North Africa trying to sell you drugs.
And once in the pubs there are several ladies of the night sitting at the bar vying for your attention. And they are not even worried about the partner who you are with.
I would avoid any pub there and only visit a restaurant if you really want to experience the vibe of Long street. But then also get dropped of in front of the restaurant and don't chance walking there.

We picked to stay in the Holiday Inn Express in Cape Town city centre as reviews were good. Cannot fault the actual hotel however it is just off Long Street. At first we thought this looked good as there seemed to be restaurants, shops, sight seeing office etc however didn’t take long for us to be approached several times by people either asking for money or food - this can be expected in many cities however in the last 2 days my husband had his arm grabbed by one man (we had to go into a near by bar to get him to leave us alone) and the other had a pocket knife in his hand - he followed us up the street until we came closer to a public safety steward. If we visit Cape Town again we wouldn’t visit Long Street and we would stay at the Waterfront. Such a shame as we’ve done so amazing things while being here.

While Nightlife is hardly my area of expertise, I am always amazed that Long Street comes up as a place to go for Nightlife. Having lived and socialised in this magnificent city for over 5 years - I can honestly say I've been out in Long Street less than 5 times and probably only ever to go to the Dubliner for some Irish Festival.
If you are looking for something more civilsed and upmarket, try the following. Caprice on Sunday nights, Jade bar on Thursdays. Trinity is also a worthwhile visit and Decodance does 80's music in Sea Point (not upmarket but fun). Students go out in Claremont to Tiger Tiger. If you want after work drinks on Friday, try Cuveau in Bree Street or the Planet bar at Mount Nelson. "Reserve" is not bad either and 31 at the top of the ABSA builidng is worth it for the view. Try Knoxville and Osuka in Gardens. In summer there are all sort of parties that come up on a weekly basis at classy venues and private houses. Think Greenpoint, Sea Point, Camps Bay, Gardens and some of the suburbs.
While Long Street certainly has character, its undeniably dodgy and all the warnings are appropriate but simply cast the city in a negative light ... and then we still have articles saying Long Street is where the nightlife is.
SInce CT has won as a top destination, I assume we attract travellers with bigger pockets than backpackers. Lets send these people to the right places... and thats not Long Street. I'm sure Paris and Syndey have there "Long Steets" too, but would they really put this forward as their best place for Nighlife.
So come to Cape Town... its magnificent in many ways. If nighlife is part of your itinerary, and you''re are not a backpacker...you can do much better than Long Street.

Be aware of Long Street after dark. I have many friends in Capetown, and have spent a lot of time in the city and surrounding areas. Long Street is like the red light district at night, and is not a place I would recommend for tourists or non-locals.

Serious safety incident
Jan 2019 • Friends
Some lovely restaurants but if you find yourself here after 10pm you can guarantee you will be mugged. We went twice this week and experienced two attempted muggings. In one instance we were 5 friends and were surrounded by about 12 men in the middle of a street with onlookers and held and knife point. We manahed to fight them off but they simply sauntered away, no fear of police. There are so many other places to go in Cape Town; stay away from long street.

I will first off by saying it's a real shame because long Street does have lovely restaurants and bars to chill in during the day and evening. We are stayin in the holiday Inn express just off long Street hotel and staff have been great but it's the homeless issue and lack of security help on the street. Throughout our honeymoon here we have been stopped by many homeless along this street for food and money and have been grabbed and one homeless guy was flashing a pen knife at us not what you want after a lovely day out. If you come to capetown stay in a hotel near the waterfront away from this area we will in the future if we comeback. Use taxis folks

Hi Shannon C, I'm trying to find out a little more about Long Street Baths before going there. Is it clean and safe? Where do you leave your belongings, do you get a locker?
Thank you.

What time does the clothing stores open and close on longstreet on a week day
Written January 15, 2016
General rule of thumb, everything in CT closes at 7/8pm unless in the Waterfront. But long street bars and clubs are open till late.

Also agree with TravelfeetZA : i won't do shopping on this street. Keep a one hour walking to visit it and then have diner somewhere and some bar music. That's it! There is nothing special on this street for shopping.
