The FD Funicular provides a comfortable ride to the top scnic areas at Cape Point. The ride does not offer any great panaromic views but it enables visitors to go to the top in comfort to enjoy the majestic views from the there and near the light house.
Some people decide to walk up. The walk up is also good but this takes about 15 minutes of uphill walking which should be okay for most people but not to those who get breathless fast. Walking up enables one to enjoy views during different sections of the climb.
To save time I do recommend the Funicular but if time is not an issue do try to walk up and down.

We took the flying dutchman as we didn't want to get sweaty for our flight later that day. It was a short but fun ride up. We were fortuniate to beat the crowds so no waits up or down. Highly recomend going early.

For most sightseers, this is the best way of ascending Cape Point. This is the third place this year where I have gone on a funicular ride. The other two were on the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular and Los Angeles’ Angels Flight Railway. The Flying Dutchman Funicular (aka, Cape Point Funicular), has a 585-metre track, compared to 95 metres for Budapest and 91 metres for Los Angeles. Although longer, it is significantly less step, has an overall height of 87 metres and maximum steepness of 16 per cent. Getting to the top, the panoramic views from the lighthouse area were great.
On vacations, many of us try to pack in as many sights as possible. Taking the funicular up and down is a time saver.

We consider this a must when visiting the "tip of Africa" and visiting the Cape of Good Hope!
We opted to spend R55.00/per person to go to the top. There is a free option to walk which is a steady incline uphill that on average takes people 30 to 45 minutes to get to the top. It obviously depends on one's fitness level but figured it would be easier to take the funicular since we were in a time crunch for other tours later on that day around Cape Town.
We thought this was well worth it because the views going up were amazing! South Africa in general is just spectacular but seeing the "tip of Africa" was just beautiful!
The ride up the funicular is about 15 minutes long, if that. The line or "q" to board the funicular not long at all and one doesn't have to wait long. The schedule is every 15 minutes going up or down.
The funicular doesn't go too fast nor too slow. It's just right to take photos on the way up or down. It isn't air conditioned so if the sun is blaring, it does get hot. There is ample space inside and have many "levels" and seating as well. It is built and stationed at a slant so hence the "levels." There was a family who rode the funicular with us and they had a baby stroller. So there is enough space for everyone to stand or sit about.
The attendants at the stations both at the bottom and top are courteous and professional. They are the one's to take your ticket and scan them for the ride up and down. You still get to keep the ticket for a souvenir, if you want?!
Overall, 5 stars out of 5 stars! I would recommend it!

When you arrive at Cape point and if you want to go up the hill to the lighthouse for phenomenal views, you have three options, walk both ways, take the funicular both ways or walk one way and take the funicular the other way. A return trip was 58 SAR and a one way trip was 48 SAR. We wanted to experience both options so we took the railway to the top and walked down and we were so glad we did as not only do you get the best of both worlds but we did not appreciate just how steep the climb was. Even when you get to the top station there are still quite a few steps to the lighthouse so take my advise , train up and walk down.

The funicular is the perfect way to reach Cape Point and enjoy the view and the old lighthouse. Do not hesitate to go up with the funicular because you need to walk longer to reach the new lighthouse when you arrived at the summit of the Flying Dutchman Funicular

Well worth the trip on this funicular railway and then walk a 100 steps more to see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the warm currents from the Indian Ocean. Get there early to avoid the coach tours

You can buy a return or a single ticket. Most people seemed to take the funicular up and then walk back down ( 10-15 min walk down). No queue when we arrived so just jumped on board. Nice smooth trip, which lasts just a couple of minutes.

When visiting Cape Point you can walk up or take the funicular up to the light house. Well worth the ride for the the wonderful views from above.

Based on the reviews I am not clear. When you get off the funicular, are there great views and gift shops there? Or do you have to walk a lot more steps to get to the views, etc? Im not great with steps so trying to understand. Thanks
