This is the first (or one of the first) wine farms as you head up the Hemel and Aarde valley. Fantastic views, and a bonus sighting of a family of the rare and endangered Blue Crane. Sadly, some of the winery staff were not so impressed as they almost ran us off the road when we slowed down to look at the cranes (we later saw the staff in the winery!). The tasting room itself is small, and there was only one person working so we ended up waiting for a while between the various tastings, as she had to travel from table to table. However, her knowledge of wine was very impressive - probably the best we encountered in the various wineries in this valley. We left with the impression that she was a wasted talent in the particular tasting room. The wines also did not impress. We found them very expensive and we certainly tasted better wines further up the valley. However, wine tastes are subjective, and we saw a few customer's pleading to be advised of their next wine release!
As a bonus, you can drive past the tasting room and head up the hill, on a dirt road, past "Braemar House" until you get to a T-junction. Stop there. From this spot, it is a short walk to the beacon at the top of the hill, and from there you have amazing views of the whole of Hermanus and the sea.
In fact, skip the wine tasting, and just go to the beacon.

The Hamilton Russell’s vineyards are located in a stunning landscape. The wine tasting is a fantastic experience as this is where some of the best wines of South Africa are crafted. We met with the owner, Anthony who is highly passionate and very knowledgeable and he made our visit one of the highlights of our trip!

Gorgeous wines in a magnificent setting. It was a cold winter day and the tasting room has a massive warm fireplace. Its an intimate space and my wife and I were the only ones there at the time. This is where we had a taste of SA's best pinot noir and one of the best chardonnays. I think its a must for visitors to the Hemel and Aarde valley.

We visit many wine farms and buy a lot of wine. We have more than 2000 bottles in our off site cellar.
We were looking forward to tasting and purchasing some more Hamilton Russell wine in their most magnificent setting.
We were met by an unhelpful and uninspiring young lady. We asked questions about purchasing different vintages we got a no…. This is it. We asked for some water…. We were told they only had tap.
We never tasted anything bought 6 bottles of Chardonnay and left.
Highly disappointing. So many other beautiful wine farms with warm and welcoming service with stunning wine in the valley.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME! Rude Rude Rude. Will never come back. Would not recommend given the wonderful estates in the area. Try Creation or Iona, or any other farm instead. Most disappointed.
@Hamilton Russell you need to take a long hard look at the way you treat your clients! Disgraceful.

After spending a number of days in the area, Hamilton Russell was our last stop on the Hemel en Aarde valley vineyards. We specifically saved it until last due to its high regard in the wine industry. HOWEVER, what a disappointment. It must be said the wines were excellent as expected, but our presence at the tasting room felt nothing more than an irritation to the staff. Complete disinterest from the "wine expert" and although a lovely setting we were keen to get away... Some much better experiences up the valley.

Ludicrous prices for wines. Just goes to show what some consumers will pay to be recognized. The presenter of the tasting was most annoying, nobody was given a chance to say anything unless she was interrupted. :-)

The scene: Being fans of Hamilton Russell wine, we could not drive past Hermanus without visiting.
Positives: a scenic drive in, leads you to a beautiful setting where you can sit outside and enjoy the calm, tranquil surrounding whilst tasting fantastic wine.
Negatives: with only one host to hand she was stretched when having to serve multiple tables, leading to patchy service
Top tip: if it's a sunny day do not miss the opportunity to sit outside whilst enjoying a lovely glass of the Hamilton Russell Chardonnay, it's our favourite.

Today Anthony Hamilton Russel opend his celler for showing us his unique collection of Chardonnays, Pinots and Pinotages which definitely belonged to the best I‘ve ever drunk from the Cape!
Also the magic of the place and the friendliness and geniality of the host were exceptional - I would not want to have missed this experience today, Thank you a lot!

Hi, we are visiting in February 2016 and would like to make contact with you. Please can you provide an email address for correspondence. We are wine guides in Burgundy and therefore have a keen interest in Pinot and Chardonnay from other wine regions. We are following a recommendation from one of our clients and have researched your wines on line. Look forward to hearing from you Joy & Robert Burgundy Discovery
