About
Our 400-acre luxury heritage estate is at the gateway to the Cape’s famous Stellenbosch wine route. Nestled in a private, exclusive eco-verse all our own, we’re so close to Cape Town and the centre of Stellenbosch, but here the stillness and tranquillity make them seem so distant. Each one of the finely and individually appointed suites honours our 18th century architectural history but with the accent on contemporary comforts. We are one of South Africa’s oldest working farms and have been growing wine for almost 330 years. We farm regeneratively, so you’re bound to notice the ducks and cattle that eat the pests and fertilize the soils. They’re a boon to our beautifully balanced, elegant Stellenbosch wines.

    Stunning lunch with a difference
We enjoyed lunch at the estate. The facility is immaculate and we watched the ducks being taken off to clear the vineyards of insects. The small plate menu meal was absolutely delicious with a variety of interesting options

Peaceful retreat , stayed for 2 nights , lovely room with a jacuzzi - watched the morning duck walk it was very sweet . Staff were all excellent and professional . Used the gym , needs a fridge with water and smaller weights . It was very quiet we were the only couple at dinner , great deserts but the main course a choice of proteins needs tweaking not a fine dining course - Would recommend for a peaceful break

    wow, going to return
Beautiful place with amazing huge rooms, outstanding food, beautiful grounds and lots of space to just roam around. I was surprised it wasn't busier. Their own wine is quite good as well - definitely worth a try. porters helped with getting bags to the rooms. Buggy to distant rooms but it's not too far to walk. There is a small gym. There are walking trails all around the property. Breakfast is amazing. Service was excellent throughout the visit.

Clara's Barn. A wonderful culinary experience!
We had dinner at Claras Barn last night and it was amazing!! We did the wine pairing menu. Every course was absolutely delicious! Bianca and Christian were fantastic hosts. Both had an excellent knowledge of the food and wines. The decor in the restaurant, which were the old stables was very tastefully done. The setting of the restaurant overlooking the dam with a fantastic sunset view was spectacular! I can highly recommend this restaurant for a fantastic dining experience!

Very underwhelming, We decided to order a cheese board and a wine tasting after asking for the menu and price from the waiter. We received the price verbally but did not receive a menu so we took what the waiter said as truth. We then received the cheese board which was a whopping R130 for a quarter piece of brie and a pinky sized piece of cheese with a few grapes and 5 crackers, even the waiter said she couldn't believe what we got. Our tasting took about an hour to taste 4 wines, as the waiter had to waiter on multiple tables at once. Once we had to be pay, we took the waiters verbal pricing and paid the amount including tip only to be told that the final amount after paying was way below what we were told. We ended up paying a R70 tip on top of a bill of R245. I will not be visiting or recommend this place to anyone.

A hidden gem? Yes. An ideal and idyllic picnic spot? Yes. A place for the family? Yes. And especially the running of the ducks.
However, they ave done away with the restaurant and one must make a purchase at the deli. Well and good! Not!!!!!!!!!! There is very little choice for those with certain dietary requirements. First of all a friend is highly allergic to gluten, yet they could not satisfy me that any of their products were gluten free. I am vegan and apart from olives there was nothing for me to enjoy.
I have been in the past and when they had the restaurant I telephoned ahead and they accommodated us. It was brilliant and we were fully prepared to pay a premium but the food was excellent and the ambiance spectacular. This time it was a failure. Telephoning elicited no response other than the deli should have something. And when we arrived there was nothing. Even the bottled water is imported. What is wrong with supporting a local South African industry? And could you please just have a few items for those who are gluten intolerant and those of us who are vegan. Myself and another customer spent 10 minutes looking and walked out with a small jar of olives each.

Dear Douglas, Thank you so much for your delightful compliments for our estate, as well as your honest review by sharing your “good, bad and ugly” experiences with us. Only by making mistakes we can learn to improve our services in every area as we truly strive for excellence in all our product and service offerings. Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate has undergone a substantial renovation as well as reinvigoration of the entire brand, which we slowly introduce to the wider public and fantastic national and international customer fan base. I am sure you have noticed the all-new Historic Homestead and Historic Werf, The Farm Deli with its amazing Duck Room, the the new wine labels and our lovely Adam & Eve Merlot Limited Collector’s Edition? After speaking to the team with regards to your really valuable feedback may I ask to kindly allow me to share some background info: 1. The Homestead Restaurant The previous restaurant situated in the homestead was indeed a beautiful, charming, small eating spot and loved by many of our patrons. The comprehensive renovation of The Historic Homestead (phase 1 completed), which is a celebrated National Monument hence very sensitive to any change, requested for a temporary closure of this restaurant. At the same time we designed and opened a completely NEW Farm Deli experience, which is part of the wider hospitality plans we have for Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate. That said, after almost two years of planning with the heritage authorities, we are already in the process of building a new full-size restaurant in SA’s oldest untouched barn from the 1700’s behind The Historic Homestead. The exciting opening is aimed for late 2020, provided all building activities go well. We are also considering the re-opening of The Historic Homestead eatery, which could be part of phase 2 and 3 of the renovations and is subject to further planning processes with the heritage committee. 2. The Farm Deli I am not sure how and why the information was provided that a purchase at our new Farm Deli is mandatory. I can assure you that this is not the case. All purchases are of course voluntary and the entire team works really hard to permanently offer daily, freshly produced SA kitchen-inspired menu food and deli items, which can be consumed in our respectfully renovated Historic Werf as well as taken home. 3. Various Dietary Offerings It is a real challenge to cater for many available dietary requirements available these days and this is certainly an area we need to improve on. The Farm Deli is open for three months now and attracts almost 1000 visitors on its busy days. The fantastic Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate Hospitality Team has mastered the new opening with all ups and downs and there are plenty areas were we need to excel for better service excellence to earn our ongoing customer’s satisfaction. We currently do have limited gluten-free options available, e.g. all bread menu items can be replaced with gluten-free bread, but this has been badly and/or not all communicated to our guests. Kindly accept my sincere apology for this terrible mistake which we will address shortly together with vegan options, too. 4. Telephonically Reservation Service You are 100% correct in being disappointed as this is an important area we identified a while ago. It unfortunately happened numerous times in the past that phone calls were either unanswered or unprofessionally addressed hence we hired a new Guest Experience Manger starting Jan 2020, which is currently in training to offer a top-class reservation experiences. I am disappointed that you had to experience this but can assure you we will massively improve in this area latest starting from Q2/2020. 5. Imported Water We 100% agree with your observation that supporting local SA businesses should be a key-priority for all business in SA and is certainly for Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate. You will be pleased to know that we either follow a “farm to table” approach, meaning we use produce grown at the farm and are also busy with a larger vegetable garden project, or we source almost all our produce from local businesses as close to the farm as possible. Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate is one of 40 WWF Conservation Champions and the careful usage of water is one key element for us (other activities: e.g. solar power generation and use, grey water usage, drip water irrigation, natural pest control, biodegradable packaging, use of vegetable inks, etc.). You may have also noticed that we offer beautiful, reusable, empty water bottles (locally manufactured) which can be filled free of charge at our water fountains inside The Historic Werf. This way we eliminate the use of plastic bottles and encourage visitors to not only re-use the bottles at the farm and at their houses but also to bring them back to their next farm visit. Since our fountain water is naturally non-carbonated we have added a carbonated, bottled water option, which will soon be replaced by proudly locally SA produced carbonated water. We currently finish the stock we have on hand after we have identified using imported water is an unacceptable business practice. I really hope the above gives you some more information about the NEW SINCE 1696 Vergenoegd Löw The Wine Estate. We strive to leave an as little as possible ecological footprint with everything we do and although we have achieved a lot during the past 12 month we are aware that there is still a lot of work ahead of us. There is exciting new projects in planning for 2020 and we truly hope you will give us the chance to welcome and share or vision with you, again. Once again thank you so much for sharing your great observations with us and have a blessed year ahead. Kind regards. Cai

We loved the duck run, and had a very good wine tasting. Steff our hostess, really knew her wine, and had a lovely sense of humour and was full of fun. They have an excellent selection of very well prices wines. We ordered breakfast from the deli, and although delicious, the service was not great. There were 5 of us, and they got 3 of the orders wrong, which meant that we ate in 3 stages, so not ideal when meeting up with old friends and then havng to eat in relays. Would definitely go back though - perfect for couples and families.

We had read a review of Die Geuwels and were so keen to try it but it was a huge disappointment. The staff were pleasant but not knowledgeable or even very interested, and most of all the food was totally underwhelming. We had a glorified toasted sandwich with not even a green leaf in sight, let alone any other accompaniment for R85 (and it made us somewhat queasy after eating it); the tuna sashimi was tiny and the charcuterie came with no bread, crackers or any other side except a few raw carrot sticks (???). We definitely would not recommend it or go back there again.

I must have driven past Vergenoegd dozens of times on the way to wine estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Big mistake. This one can't be more than 12 minutes from the airport. You can actually see (but not hear) the N2 - so near, yet so far. Refreshingly ungentrified, Geuwels restaurant oozes serenity. The food is delicious and excellent value for money. (R 500 for a couple to share 7 tapas-style plates.) Abathia and her smiling team were the cherry on top. What's in a name? Abathia is Greek and means calmness.

Unjsatisfying! They serve a ham and sausage dish without bread, you have to order additionally the roosterkoek. A young white waiter, very energetic, aside when it comes to serving customers. You want to smoke, there is an area without shade, when you ask this waiter, he ignores you.

You even have to bring your ice bucket with wine yourself to that area.

Never again, bad service.

What a disappointment! This place has so much potential but the staff and the prices let it down. We went for Sunday lunch on a beautiful day.
One can sit outside under the trees and make up ones own picnic by buying from the deli on site or ordering from the kitchen.
The staff were so disinterested to the point of rudeness especially a young girl at the till point ( unfortunately didn’t get her name). At least another 3 customers complained about her rudeness.
Overpriced food - Dalewood Camembert R80. I pay around R40
And the cooked food was disappointing.
The runner duck parade was the only highlight. Go for that and skip all else.
