- P&J's TravelsFarnham, United Kingdom184 contributionsIdyllicOur first visit to Rust en Vrede estate and certainly won't be our last. This is one of the oldest estates in the area and the setting is beautiful. We sat at an outside table, surrounded by beautiful buildings, set in manicured gardens, looking out over vine covered hills. Rather than a tasting, we decided to try the "Winemakers Lunch" which was superb. I had the Chalmar sirloin, fries & salad which comes with a glass of the Estate Red. My wife had the salmon & vegetables that was accompanied by a glass of Donkiesbaai Steen. Both meals were beautifully cooked, very substantial and well presented but the star for me was the ReV Estate (my primary reason for visiting) which was superb. Highly recommend both the venue and the wine.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 16, 2023
- Mr Berry228 contributionsIdyllic!A wonderful place to sample the wines - red- and one of my favourite vineyards. A great place to enjoy wine and lunch under the trees in this idyllic setting!! Lunch was only a choice of 3 dishes but was paired with wine. In this case, less choice was more and everything was excellent quality.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten April 1, 2024
- Sightsee431843667684 contributionsExcellent Wine Tasting!Despite the bad weather we thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting experience at Rust and Vrede. They had a lovely fire place inside the tasting room area to set the ambiance. The waiter who assisted us was very knowledgeable and friendly, and had a lot of passion for the wines. It was a very educational tasting experience and the estate is beautiful. Would highly recommend their lunch which is paired with a glass of wine.Visited July 2024Travelled on businessWritten July 24, 2024

Upon inquiring if we were able to book a wine tasting and lunch, we were told this is not possible….
Fine, we arrived early and got to choose where we wanted to sit…
The very long tables should have been a dead giveaway to what was arriving later…
Bus loads!
A limited tasting and menu…
We were aware of this…
No vegetarian option what so ever! Potatoes and salad or starve!
Tea? No, only coffee??????
(How hard is it to add a tea bag to a cup??????)
A waiter who cannot tell the difference between broccoli and asparagus????
Not quite sure what they do in winter (probably close) but clearly only cater for bus loads of tourists! (Who can pay their ridiculous prices)
Will definitely not go back, there are so many other beautiful, affordable options out there!

Tasting area is cold. The wines are overpriced and the reds all full of tannin. The young waiter was very bored, arrogant and boastful about the relatively young estate. We had a plain meal ( one of three offered with the tasting) then was refused tea although my colleagues had coffee.
I said no problem as I had a tea bag on me then they refused to bring me hot water saying if I used a tea bag i would be asked to leave! Have never met such rubbish attitude in my life.
Given spurious excuse that it was not a restaurant. Sums up their extreme pretentiousness. Will never go back. there are many much better wineries in the Cape and it was an embarrassment to be talked down to.

Apparently, this was once a great winery. That must have been some time in the past. Their three premiere wines are no longer produced (apparently they recently ripped out all of those vines). Their Single Vineyard Cab Sauv is sold out forever. Their other two wines are still available by the bottle or case, but cannot be tasted without purchasing a bottle. If you have visited a winery anywhere in the world, you recognize this is a highly unusual arrangement — I have not encountered a winery that would require you to commit to buying a bottle from their latest release (let alone a case) without tasting the wine. These particular bottles run ~2000 Rand, which is on the higher end.
After a number of rounds of questions about this, the manager came out and offered to allow us to taste the wine if we would commit to buying a case or two. Again, agreeing to spend 24,000-48,000 Rand without tasting is quite an ask. She explained that they had ripped out the vines, but did not seem to acknowledge that, if these were the vines that are the basis for their reputation, there is little left to justify their reputation.
We tasted one blend, which was so-so. Instead of being charged the tasting price, they surreptitiously marked it up to the glass price (approximately 5.5x). By that point we were so tired of fighting for a basic level of competence that we just paid and were glad to leave.
Perhaps they were good once. Perhaps they will be good again in the future. Right now, they most certainly are not.

We had a fantastic wine tasting done by Sune who was excellent! After that we stayed for the lunch which was either Salmon with a glass of Donkiesbaai Chenin or a Sirloin steak with a glass of Syrah. It was amazing! What a special place sitting under the trees gazing out at the beautiful gardens. An absolute must!!

Beautiful Estate, delicious food but I found it outrageous that no non alcoholic drinks are available. I am a teetotaler and I was offered water to drink, nothing else. No fruit juice, soda or anything except water. We had a very expensive lunch which was accompanied by Rust en Vrede wines. Nothing else is allowed. I had a bottle of juice in the car but was forbidden from bringing it into the restaurant. Very disappointing for me and very embarrassing for my host.

One of the most beautiful tasting rooms I have ever come across. Sitting in the cellar was quite the experience, but weather permitting outside is also very nice. The lady helping us was very knowledgeable and friendly, and had a lot of passion for the wines. Just a pity that their tastings are quite expensive not even to mention the wine. Definitely not somewhere to go shop if you are on a budget.

Five of us had the winemaker's lunch this afternoon. One cannot reserve a table so we rocked up at 12.15.
The venue is attractive and is situated in pretty surroundings. There are enough parking bays for everyone.
We sat on the terrace, which was very pleasant. Our waiter was excellent : friendly and attentive.
There are two choices : either steak or salmon, each served with a glass of wine. My steak was exactly as ordered and delicious and was accompanied by French fries and a salad. Excellent - and so was the wine. Those that ordered the salmon were equally enthusiastic. We rounded off the meal with coffee and went home highly delighted.

I found the staff friendly and knowledgeable, rain was threatening and a staff member rushed out with umbrellas. The setting is really nice.
However, my wife's steak was full of gristle and both steaks were luke warm and the flavored butter knob wouldn't even melt. Was the experience worth the cost, no, there are more affordable quality options all over the region.

Specialist in Red wines and red meats. This is the reason to visit, if this is not your thing then probably give R&V a miss. The service is polite and swift even on a busy day. Tastings and lunch tables are interspersed which creates great ambience. You cannot fault the winemaker nor chef on the grill. A great lunch with memorable wines.

You can stay anywhere in Cape Town, it's an easy drive. We went for lunch, you need about 3 hours there for a leisurely visit. It's a 45 minute drive from Central Cape Town.
