Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

Going to beautiful Buenos Aires for 1 month, my purpose was to improve my ability to dance tango. A friend recommended that I take lessons with Lucia y Gerry, which I did.
I booked lessons with them from Vancouver and started as soon as I arrived.
I saw Lucia y Gerry for 1 month 3 or 4 times a week for 1 hour lessons in a spacious, bright dance studio with parquet and mirror and very enjoyable music adapted to my level.
The studio is easy to access as taxis in Buenos Aires are very affordable for tourists at least when I was there in the spring 2019. By the way, spring is a particularly beautiful season, blooming trees along every avenue and little gardens and parks here and there in the city.

A benefit of having 2 teachers, a woman and a man, is that while one observes how the student dances, the other feels how the student moves and responds to the lead.
From different point of views they could both help me to correct my bad habits and add some new elements to my knowledge of tango; as well men and women have different ways of explaining the same things.

Besides being very satisfied with the high quality of their teaching, I was immediately
at ease with them, their sense of humour, their light-hearted approach and their constant encouragement and support.

Also, Lucia y Gerry took me, as well as other students, to several milongas where I had the chance to dance with Gerry in a room full of experienced dancers.
Unfortunately most milongas in Buenos Aires are not (yet?) open to the idea of women assuming the role of men i.e. leading the couple. The number of women everywhere I have danced always exceed the number of men.

For an Au revoir, they sent me videos of me dancing at the milongas and of them dancing the basics and more for me to practice😘

Last but not least, since I came back to Vancouver, many friends told me that I have improved and that I am easier to dance with.

Merci mille fois to both of you, Lucia y Gerry, It was a pleasure to dance with and learn from tous les deux. Abrazos et à l'année prochaine, j'espère. 😍

Oh where, oh where did our Porteno souls go? When we met Lucía and Gerry for our lesson the hope was that figures diligently acquired during a tango dalliance long ago would manifest themselves anew, a solid foundation of grace and aplomb for them to polish before sending us proudly out onto the dance floor. It wasn’t to be. Where my feet sought floor they found the tops of my partner’s shoes. When she was to float like a cloud in my arms it was as though we were moving a mattress into an apartment. Lucía and Gerry took this all in with great good humor and encouragement. By the end of the lesson a spell of good balance and footwork rekindled our tango spirits while leaving us with the realization that it would take many lessons with teachers of Lucía and Gerry’s caliber to inhabit our tango dreams. On to the milonga!
Seated ringside at a milonga with Lucía and Gerry elevates the evening into another dimension. They are in their element and their enthusiasm for the atmosphere and energy in the swirl of dancers is infectious. You will be inspired to get up and try some steps. If they don’t turn out as good as you hope for no matter, tango has begun to cast it’s spell on you. When Lucía pulls you into the dance floor as Gerry beams with encouragement from across the table you’ll know you’re having a night in Buenos Aires that you’ll long remember.

What a fantastic night! We were a group of 6 with no dancing experience and had our lesson on 9th March. Not sure what to expect, but it turned out everyone was just as useless as us!! Not a problem for Lucia & Gerry - within the hour we were all competent tango dancers (well, almost!!).
Off to the Milonga afterwards for a great night. We had perfect hosts who encouraged us to dance, alongside the locals, and ensured we all had plenty of drinks and snacks.
Unfortunately, COVID was just about to close Argentina, so the locals were probably a bit nervous about having tourists around, but they did not make it too obvious - most were very friendly. As it turned out, this was Lucia and Gerry's last lesson and Milonga trip prior to lockdown. They gave us their personal phone number as they anticipated we may need help in the following few days - we were very grateful as it did prove difficult for some of our party to get out of Argentina.
Hopefully they are both safe and their business gets up and running soon. Once this awful situation is over, we fully recommend anyone visiting BA makes this one of the highlights of their holiday. Thanks Lucia & Gerry for everything

If you want both to learn the steps of tango, and understand the culture of the dance, Lucía y Gerry are ideal. Their teaching is both gentle and progressive, so that you feel encouraged to do better. They can take you from novice to professional, depending on what you want. Their boutique dancehall is appropriate and easy to get to by cost effective taxi. You are provided with photos and videos to continue your development. Thanks Lucía y Gerry for making this a highlight of our trip to Buenos Aires.

My wife and I had several private tango lessons with Lucia and Gerry while we were visiting Buenos Aires for a week. They were wonderful instructors that helped us refresh and improve our tango dancing. We had fun with them and enjoyed their direct, practical lesson style. They also took us to a local milonga which let us experience some of the local tango culture. Highly recommended teachers.

Our short stay showed that moving around in BA by taxi is the best way! The place is easy to be found, well kept with a big mirror on one side, a parquet dance floor and sufficient space for a dance class of let's say 8 to 10 people. We were lucky to have the luxury of being the only couple for a longer lesson (90 minutes). Lucia's and Gerry's instructions and feedbacks were patient and well adjusted to our individual beginner status. So we had a great time, including the milonga after the lesson. Thanks a million to Lucia & Gerry für this wonderful opportu8nity!!

Lucia & Gerry were fantastic. They made us feel very welcome and didnt make us look like we were dancing with 2 left feet (even though we were)!! They were patient and fun. The milonga was a great authentic experience. It was fun to put what we learned in the studio into practice. There were no judgements from the other dancers, just a relaxed fun evening.

My wife and I took six private tango lessons while staying in Buenos Aires and were super satisfied with everything. Lucia and Gerry really knew how to adapt to us with their teaching style (I am more of a beginner and my wife is already better). We made huge progress in only one week while also having a fantastic time. On the last evening we also joined them to a local Milonga. It can't get more authentic than that! We really recommend doing tango lessons with Lucia and Gerry while you are in BA!

We can't recommend a private class with Lucia and Gerry enough! They were super friendly and, more importantly, patient, but, before you knew it, we were dancing away. Lucia and Gerry taught us several basic steps and we were finally able to string them all together after an hour. They took pictures throughout so we can relive the memories. It'll make you catch the tango bug.
