Neighbourhood: San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.

The museum is myopically focused on a seemingly brief period of Argentina history for the most part, and the walk through is not even close to chronological, so it's tough to keep up. The descriptions are almost all exclusively in Spanish with no audio option for other languages, which is somewhat shocking in a big city like Buenos Aires. We did our best to read them with our Spanish skills, but it was overall a boring and exhausting experience, unfortunately.

Great value to enter. You scan a code to get the English text on your phone. Great exhibits and some beautiful art. I learnt a lot about Argentina and the Martin Sword is pretty cool.

We were very exited to visit this museum and learn about Argentina's history but it was a total disappointment. Everything is written in Spanish. No translation whatsoever. Not even the audio guides. We tried asking for a guide even if we had to pay an extra fee but even the guide only speaks spanish :(

Covers from pre-columbian times to 1914. Interesting items, photos, documents, etc. It is difficult to figure out how to visit the rooms in a chronological way. Unfortunately many of the narrative descriptions are marred by a leftist indigenist, anti establishement tone.
Good for those that have some familiarity with Argentine history.
Has an interesting but somewhat hidden store that sells souvenirs and books, needs to be highlighted.

I stumbled here whilst roaming in BA and waited a short time for the English tour. I was the only one and the guide showed me the key exhibits with a truly fantastic explanation of how BA was established and the historical context of Argentina in relation to the Spanish conquest, Peru, Bolivia, European roots etc. It was without doubt the best museum tour I have ever experienced and I came away amazed how much I learned in one hour. If you like this type of stuff then this is unmissable.

This place is very average. It's all nice enough but it's not a full museum and English is almost not existent; which as this is a national museum we found surprising.
If you have loads of time here visit, otherwise miss it

I went with my partner two days ago. It was very good since we did the tour in English and we were the only ones to do it. So we had the tour guide just for us, where he told us all the Argentine restaurant.
Maria, she has a great knowledge, it's like an encyclopedia.

This history museum in San Telmo and located in an old mansion tells the story of the country for the most part concentrating on the 19th century. It has a fine collection of artefacts too including the sword of San Martin. I'm not sure how much non-Spanish readers will get out of it.

We had a great visit to the Museo Historico Nacional, arriving just in time for the English language tour. As noted in other reviews the descriptions are in Spanish, so if you cannot speak Spanish but can understand English the guided tours provide a real insight into both the history of Argentina and the history of the museum itself.
Check the museum's website for day the week and times for English language tours, our guide book was clearly out of date for this critical information. (Click on the "Visita" link on the website for details)
On our visit we had two guides, one learning the process so the other could go on holidays. Their commentary was unexpected but both entertaining and informative. Rather that provide a summary of the displays we got a deconstruction of the way the museum actually presented Argentina's history. A discussion of how the establishment of the museum was an attempt at creatingthe story of Argentina from a white male perspective at the expense of the role of women, the Native American's, the Slaves, the Creole etc. This was done in an informative, humorous and entertaining manner. A discussion with us visitors rather than just a presentation done a thousand times before our visit.
If you think that this might be too political, don't be put off. If you get the chance to have the type of tour we had, join the discussion. And there is an overview of Argentina's history which includes the normal highlights such as the role played by San Martin as the father of the country but also the roe played by women, some of whom were not always following protocol
.
And the other reason to include this on your visit to BA is to see the soldier guarding Sam Martin's saber. At first we thought it was a mannequin dressed up in ceremonial uniform with sword next to the display. But then an eye blinked, a cheek muscle moved and we realised this was a living person. An actual serving soldier standing rigidly to attention protecting this relic of Argentina's history. We were very impressed by his discipline. And it was fun hearing from our guide at the way that some younger females respond to this soldier in full regalia. All the while the soldier himself stood still, immovable.
So if you are in BA on one of the days the English tour is on, make the time to visit. If it is anything like our tour you will have fun, learn about Argentina and get to see a museum in a new way.
