Architectural landmarks in the city’s oldest neighborhood have been restored, and this revitalized area is distinctly artistic, with cafes, antique shops, cobblestone streets and lots of artists and dancers.

Though we had an enjoyable trip to the market I want to warn people about the thieves that are there. My father who is 82 was wearing an expensive watch and he was attacked while in San Thelmo The area is crawling with professional thieves so do not bring anything that looks expensive such as jewellery or watches or purses... We went to San Telmo to visit the market, to buy antiques, watch tango, look at the area and just enjoy the ambience. Silver, antiques and leather was relatively cheap. I would recommend a visit, absolutely.

We enjoyed visiting San Telmo. Need to be able to walk it to get the feel. Good food in typical restaurants.

I've been to the main square on Sundays, but this time went of a Friday. There is a huge difference. For a Sunday I'd rank it at very good, but for a weekday my ranking is poor. Thus for this review I selected the mid-point, being average. Local neigbourhoods provide a good indication of how many BA residents lived in... More

San Telmo offers great dining, shopping and lots of tourist attractions. It is in the center of town so you can't get bored in this area.

I was interested in this collection of old junk 30 years ago. Did like to see the tango in a little restaurant

Old town without a pretentiousness sense, cute neighborhood. Their Sunday Market can be good but don't go there hoping you can bargain shop antiques in the actual stores they are notoriously overpriced.

This amazing flea market extends for blocks and blocks. Great finds at incredible prices. There are cool shops and cafes along the way. You will love the street musicians who are also quite talented. We loved our day in San Telmo. Plan on at least one day to take in everything!

I really love San Telmo - especially if you are there on a Sunday where they have vendors selling their souvenirs or artisan products, good food at the restaurants and tango shows.

Staying in San Telmo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
