I hadn't been here in 25 years and I wanted to see if it survived as a bookstore. It is there in all its splendor. The building itself is worth the visit. There is also a fine selection of music by Argentine artists and this is a good place for books on the region. In the back of the store... More

See something a little different when you visit this vast book shop which is in a beautiful, old, restored theatre. Lovely cafe on what used to be the stage.

I could spend days in there browsing through the books (I read Spanish). For non Spanish readers, the setting still could be interesting. Excellent Parilla next door (Grill) and others not far...

Absolutely gorgeous bookstore in a former theater! Could have spent hours there. Not sure if there are books in English, but found what I was looking for, plus more.

Besides the architecture of El Ateneo, they have a great selection of book, either in Spanish or in English. Good attention and a nice coffee shop at where it used to be the stage. It really is worth the visit!

I love bookshops and Buenos Aires has literally hundreds of them, many of which are open until 2 or 3am, especially on Corrientes. El Ateneo Grand Splendid is in a league of its own. It is located close to the corner of Callao and Santa Fe avenues and set within an old Theatre which became a cinema in the 1930s.... More

It's probably the most beautiful book store I've seen and it has such grand decor inside with the whole old heritage theatre look. It's definitely worth going in to take some pictures but don't expect to find too many English books cos there's only a teeny tiny section of it somewhere (I was told but I didn't bother looking). It's... More

Staying in Recoleta

Neighbourhood Profile
Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.
