Neighbourhood: Belgrano
As one of the main commercial hubs of Buenos Aires, Belgrano has something for everyone. The myriad of shop windows in Cabildo Ave. will draw you in, but it is Chinatown — an area of no more than two square blocks — which will keep you hooked. Crowned by an ornate arch marking its entrance and filled with small stores packed to the brim, it is a place where colour and scent emanate from every corner, particularly during the Chinese New Year when they spill over to surrounding areas. But if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, the residential quarter of Belgrano is the perfect destination. This section of town features some of the most magnificent mansions in the city, spread out on cobbled streets lined by tall, majestic trees: a true feast for the eyes.

Great place to see real Argentinian football. But complicated ticket process. Below is what you need to do to see a game as a tourist (do not pay the $100+ tour tickets - the locals will cry for you if you do!!)...

1. Go to ticketsriverplate.com (there is an English language option) - from there go to login and it will ask you if you want to create an account. You need to have an account to buy tickets but all you need in order to set up is login and passport details. Choose the non-member option when you are prompted.

2. The account process is pretty easy. First you put in your nationality and passport ID. It will match the two and give you a full login sheet to fill in. This is all in Spanish but Google translate can help if you’re stuck.

3. Once you’ve got your login sorted (and confirmed via email) you will be able to purchase tickets. Remember that you can only by one ticket per login so if you’re going with someone else - they’ll also need to create an account. (You can still buy them together and sit together - I’ll explain later).

4. Go back to ticketsriverplate.com (and login) and go to tickets section. Tickets are given priority to members and members friends first before general sale. There are normally a fair few that head to general sale but be quick and book when available (normally 1-2 weeks before the game). Available matches and tickets will be shown in this section.

5. If a match is available, a banner will appear you can click on show tickets. This brings up the standard stadium picture with options underneath for each sections tickets. Recommendation is to pick San Martin Alta section. It’s great atmosphere, next to but away from the elites and good views. Best still there’s seating but not numbered so you’ll have no problems sitting together.

6. You can only select 1 ticket at a time - prices are standard here. But you can go back and purchase another ticket and just add to basket. Make sure you add the ticket under your friends account details. The basket area will let you link the ticket to that person. Just add them all into the basket and then start linking them.

7. Buy your tickets! All major credit cards accepted. They do ask for an Argentinian DNI number for the credit card. This isn’t important - make up any 4 digit number and it will let you through.

8. Once purchased you’ll have an option to print tickets at home. Do this but remember that this is just a voucher - not the ticket!!

9. All tickets need to be collected from the stadium before the match. The print out is not a ticket and they will not let you through. On match day itself the ticket office is only open at certain times and not directly before the game. They’ll send you an email to tell you collection times if you wait till game day to collect. You must collect tickets at these times!

10. For the match, we took a cab to the end of the road before it became pedestrian only. From there it’s only about 1km to the stadium. It felt quite safe and there are plenty of check points along the way. You’ll need to show the tickets and ID at each stage (the actual passport not a print out!). Keep passports in a money belt, don’t show any jewellery (leave watches etc in the hotel) and dress either plan clothing or in River Plate colours! You can buy replica shirts on the streets after the game for around $12.

11. Drinks and food are expensive. Don’t bother to eat there but water etc you can buy at stadium. No queues or anything for the bars (no alcohol served FYI). Don’t bring water with you - they’ll confiscate it.

12. Getting back home after is a bit tougher. The area around the stadium is quite safe. I recommend walking towards the Belgrano district and wait for a taxi at a major intersection deep into Belgrano. That way you’ll avoid most of the football traffic jam.

Very old stadium, host of the 78 World Cup. The area and the building is very insecure, dirty and there are not public toilets. Not recomended to go for a match because of the hooligans

Seeing a match at River Plate Stadium was quite a spectacle. We got good seats through a travel agent and went with a small group of people. I was glad we went with the group because the locals mean business when it comes to their football matches. We have some big events in the States but this level of excitement and fan engagement made it a wonderful event I was impressed with the crowd chants. Amazed that the opposing fans had their own section and were dismissed from the stadium before the local supporters. We couldn't leave the stadium until the traveling team and fans were several miles outside of the city limits. The soccer was as good and the spectacle that surrounded it. Now we try to go to a soccer match or sporting event in every foreign city we travel to.

River Plate Stadium ("El Monumental") is one of the most famous in the world - for the ground itself and its mad crowd. For the last 6 months away fans have been banned due to constant trouble, but even without them the atmosphere was electric. Before the match several roads around the ground are closed off and we had to go through three different security cordons to get to the ground - bags and bodies searched and tickets checked. My wife and I had great seats near the centre line and a few rows back and around 50,000 filled the place - we booked the tickets - and a guide to come with us, through the Hilton Hotel.

Once the match started the whole crowd went bonkers! They sang for virtually 90 minutes - fast beating latin-American songs with their own words accompanied by huge, pounding drums. For some songs everyone jumped to their feet and pogoed whilst punching out their left arms in time - a massive unified dance.

In the high stands at the ends of the ground, we could see that the whole concrete structure was moving with the pressure of thousands of simultaneous jumpers - I fear that one day the terraces behind the goals may just give up and collapse. All through the game men and women threaded their way through the crowd selling snacks - we didn't sample these.

To our left, and only just above the stadium planes added more noise, heading for the domestic aiport and wheeling away as they came close to that end of the ground. At hte end of the match, an inflatable tunnel was erected from the pitch into the stands and through this the ref and linesmen were escorted off by police. Other police, in riot gear, lined the pitch between the crowd and the playing surface. Later I asked an Argentinian "why all the security before and after the game?". He said .... even without away fans .... "when we lose we fight and when we win ... we fight!".

We didn't see any fights, however, and despite all the chaos and crowds on the way in and out, we did not for one moment feel unsafe. I even got interviewed briefly by the TV to ask what I thought of their great team ... what could I say? Excellente!

The match? River won 1-0 and went top of the table ....

Even though the stadium is dated (like most stadiums in South America) it is worth the experience. The museum is phenomenal, presenting all of the trophies gained through decades. The tour is short but to the point. You'll visit most interesting points during the walk around. The tour is in Spanish but the host could speak good English and it was very kind to translate for us. After La Bombonera, this is another stadium you must visit while in Buenos Aires.

To get tickets online you need to register in the club's website because the tickets are personalized and you need to show ID at the entrance, prices are fare and the atmosphere is just great!! Don't fall in travel agencies, it will be super expensive.
