The area
Neighbourhood: Recoleta
Characterised by the French-style mansions which are the legacy of its aristocratic past, Recoleta is the true “Paris of the South.” Walking around this neighbourhood is an experience like no other in Buenos Aires: its streets are lined with elegant apartment buildings, exclusive boutiques, and former mansions turned into high-end hotels and embassies, which exude an alluring air of sophistication and class. You'll also find a rich cultural scene centred on the National Museum of Fine Arts, the National Library, and the Recoleta Cultural Center; as well as some great shopping spots, like the Buenos Aires Design Mall with an artists' fair set up in Plaza Francia every weekend.

We have rented apartments in this barrio 3 times now and I really love it. We are between Cordoba and Santa Fe, walking distance to so many things, close to the subway and round the corner to a fabulous empanada/pizza place. It's not the fanciest, ritziest barrio, but we enjoy it here.

One of BA's pleasant neighborhoods, full of cafes and bars and some very nice apartment buildings. Good place for a long walk around.

We spent some time here during our few days in BA. It's one of the most interesting and safe places, lots of restaurants and cafes and hotels.

One of the upscale neighborhoods in town with restaurants and cafes, plus a bunch of hotels. You can wander this area and have fun.

One of this dynamic city's better neighborhoods with places to eat and drink and fairly safe, so take a long walk and see the sites.

I'm from San Francisco where we have one of the largest Chinese communities outside Asia. So the Barrio Chino here in BA was almost a shock. First, its not in the city center but in the north part of the Distrito Federal. It is somewhat a tourist attraction with lots of stores selling herbs, insence and other Chinese stuff. None of the goods are worth it but the atmosphere is wonderful. Tree lined streets and the main one has been turned into a pedestrian only right of way. Many Chinese restaurants and snack bars. Wonderful to wander around and people watch. I thoroughly enjoyed the time there.
Suburban train stops 10m away!
Highly recommended.

The area encompasses Recoleta and areas on the other side of Sante Fe up towards Palmero, then extending almost to downtown. We like this area, Barrio Norte, as there is everything one expects for a wonderful visit: hotels, apartments, restaurants, bars, entertainment, shopping, etc. Most of all it's safe, unlike the large cities in the US. You are a taxi ride away from museums, theaters, and Buenos Aires historical sites!
