If you are looking for a genuine Buenos Aires experience, Clandestino Music should be on your list. Helena took us to a couple of different places that we would never have found ourselves and were clearly off the beaten tourist path (both the dinner and music venues).

We attended a Milonga and a concert and we found both to be real fun, but also very different. The Milonga had a fantastic live band and it was intriguing to experience the unwritten rules associated with the Tango and these events .
The concert was a showcase of how Tango is evolving and how the new generation of musicians are incorporating different influences. In our case for example, the band incorporated elements of folklore, rock and even Bach into the more traditional tango. As Helena is originally from Canada, it was a great plus that nothing got lost in translation.

As the Tango is an integral part of the Buenos Aires experience, we certainly call on Helena again when we go back.

If you are looking for a unique or authentic way to experience the tango history and culture in Buenos Aires, look not further than Clandestino Music Travel. We initially inquired with our hotel about wanting to see a Tango dance performance while on vacation in Buenos Aires. Tango shows seem to be the most popular way to experience tango for tourists, but when our hotel told us about Helena and her program, suddenly a Tango show sounded so cheesy. We inquired with Helena about planning an evening out for us and she was incredibly responsive and enthusiastic. We had only one night left in BA and with it being a holiday weekend, Helena had to get creative. Fortunately, she is very well connected to the tango scene and was able to put together a super fun and unique night despite the scheduling challenge. She arranged for us to see a performance of one of Argentina's top contemporary Tango groups. We did a short walking tour around the neighborhood of the venue which has a rich history. We also met with one of her friends, the bass player for the group before the performance. Helena translated our questions which made for a fun and educational chat. When the performance was over she offered to take us to a Milogna which is above and beyond what was planned. This was one more authentic and fun way to experience Tango. We would not have been able to plan this ourselves, so we are go grateful to have found Clandestino. Can't recommend enough!

Best thing I did in BA! Helena took a small group to an amazing tango night. Picture an abandoned warehouse totally painted black inside, rickety chairs and tables, a bar, and the best home made empanadas. Argentinian young people are reinventing the tango. And I mean music and lyrics, not tourist dances. Tango is music and this new wave of tango artists continues the tradition of rebel Alberto Piazzola, by reinventing the traditional music. The event I went to was a young band with a number of singers, a tango rapper, an anarchist historian who read from his published works and a cartoonist drawing live on to a screen. It's still tango music, no doubt about that but this new wave was so exciting.
Helena knows how to find these things for you. If you are looking for an edgy, amazing, authentic experience let Helena find it for you.

We took the Milonga in San Telmo option on a Sunday evening. We went late afternoon and walked around the flea market which was very impressive with lots of lovely things to look at and buy as well as some of the local shops. The area is bustling.
We did find a nice restaurant and had a typical local meal and wine nearby.
We arrived at the square just before 7 pm and there were already people dancing and lots of spectators. We stayed for quite a while as locals danced (some bringing their dancing shoes to change into and others dancing in their normal shoes) and then some of the more ‘professional’ tango dancers took to the floor who were excellent to watch. It was a lovely atmosphere and later we decided to have a drink in one of the local bars around the square. Afterwards we went back to watch more dancing and then it started to rain so everyone started to leave and we went caught a taxi back to our hotel.
It really was a lovely authentic way to see Tango - we spoke to a couple who had been to a show and they preferred the more local/intimate display in the square at San Telmo.
Also we felt very safe in the area.
We would definitely recommend this visit/tour and Helena’s local knowledge is excellent as is her communication. Thankyou for organising.

I'm an Argetninian who'd lived abroad for more than 5 years. I took the tour because I wanted to do something different. Truely I wouldn't have known about this venue.
Music was fantastic and the show had some extra bonus track that are an amazing experience for both locals and visitors. This is especially good for those tourist who want to blend with the locals.
Moreover, we had the pleasure to talked to one of the members of the band and ask him questions. Helena is such a pleasant person and knows a lot about Buenos Aires and Tango history. Because she speaks both Spanish and English, the tour can be great for those who otherwise would miss a lot due to not speaking Spanish.
Overall, I had a fantastic time and managed in an event that I would have never known about.
Thanks Helena!!!

During my time in Buenos Aires I went on at least 5 tours with Clandestino Music. Helena is so knowledgeable about the history and vibrant life of tango. Each time I went we met the musicians either before or after the show and on one occasion Helena asked us if we wanted to check out a cafe with some more live music after the main event. Obviously we did and after about 15 minutes at the cafe the band from the first show turned up. Unlike any tour I've ever been on, it was more like going out with friends, one of whom was deeply involved in the local tango scene. If you want to get off the main tourist beat, have a real local experience, and learn all about tango there is really no other option.

I was only in Buenos Aires for 48 hours. I had searched online for Tango, but all I found were shows. I wanted something more real, more authentic, more Buenos Aires. But where to start? Who to talk to? And, I wanted a lesson - but how? Enter Helen and her Clandestino Music Travel.

From the first email, Helen was amazing. Yes, she could help me find an authentic tango experience. Yes, she could help translate this world so I could experience a true tango night. As an aspiring tango dancer herself (including a pair of amazing tango shoes!), Helen brings the world of tango to life.

As a native English speaker, she translates not only the language, but also the culture behind the tango. And, she is amazingly well connected.

On the night we went out, not only did she secure us a tango lesson with not one, but two tango masters, she also took us to a very special, tango celebration event with 3 tango bands. Of all my travels in the world, this was a highlight.

If you want to experience REAL tango, the tango of the milonga, then Helen is who you want to book with. She will translate this amazing world and make it real, allowing the beauty and seduction of tango to come alive for one night.

I had a fantastic time with Clandestino. I met up with Helena the tour operator, and we attended a super cool gig in the bohemian neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The concert as fantastic, and the other music lovers on the tour were great! This was a wonderful way to meet other people from around the world who were visiting Buenos Aires and love music as much as I do. As an added bonus, before the concert, a musician in the band came over and gave us some background on the band and the style of music they would be playing that night. A wonderful night out with a charming guide!

Being a big music lover, I wanted to experience the best of what makes the local scene unique but also expressed a desire to avoid the packaged tour shows. Helena is fully immersed in the tango scene and knows the best musicians and venues and was able to suss out what I was looking for, making suggestions until we arrived at a few ideas. She took me to a couple of places in Palermo Soho to show me the range of what the scene had to offer. Both were wonderful, but it was the Diego Schissi Quintet at an intimate jazz bar that really knocked me out. The first place we went to was more traditional, complete with a dance lesson beforehand and milonga afterward. The Schissi show was totally different and showed me some new and exciting directions that modern tango composition is taking.

Then, when she heard that I once played samba, she offered to take me to a hidden gem of a venue in Barracas that’s in its first months of operation but is one of the coolest places I’ve been to in my travels. Through her connections, she was able to arrange a surprise invitation for me to play with the samba band for their 10-minute finale. Talk about a personal touch! Helena is totally in the know, enthusiastic, and great fun. Highly recommended!

While here in Buenos Aires for 2 months I knew I had to experience the world of tango but I didn't quite know how. There are so many tours, milongas, recommendations that I didn't know where to start. I found Helena who runs the tours and she gave us the most wonderful introduction into the tango scene here. She took us to an authentic milonga (which I would have never found myself), we had an amazing class from two incredible teachers and then spent the evening watching the dancers and people of BA dance the night away. The music was amazing and Helena, who is super knowledgable and passionate about tango, explained the scene, where tango comes from and all our other questions. It was wonderful, I couldn't recommend this enough.
