We took the Milonga in San Telmo option on a Sunday evening. We went late afternoon and walked around the flea market which was very impressive with lots of lovely things to look at and buy as well as some of the local shops. The area is bustling.
We did find a nice restaurant and had a typical local meal and wine nearby.
We arrived at the square just before 7 pm and there were already people dancing and lots of spectators. We stayed for quite a while as locals danced (some bringing their dancing shoes to change into and others dancing in their normal shoes) and then some of the more ‘professional’ tango dancers took to the floor who were excellent to watch. It was a lovely atmosphere and later we decided to have a drink in one of the local bars around the square. Afterwards we went back to watch more dancing and then it started to rain so everyone started to leave and we went caught a taxi back to our hotel.
It really was a lovely authentic way to see Tango - we spoke to a couple who had been to a show and they preferred the more local/intimate display in the square at San Telmo.
Also we felt very safe in the area.
We would definitely recommend this visit/tour and Helena’s local knowledge is excellent as is her communication. Thankyou for organising.

My husband and I wanted to see an authentic tango performance — or better yet, a local tango event, without all the sequin costumes and choreography. We had no idea where to start and then we found these amazing reviews of Helena’s Clandestino Music Tours and decided to try. We had the best time!! She clearly knows everyone in the music and tango scene in B.A., so on any given night she really has her finger on the pulse of what’s the best option for a fun evening of tango, or live music. Also, she’s just great fun and has a wealth of knowledge about the city. This is a far better option than just scrolling Facebook and hoping you pick the right place... especially if you’re not from B.A. With Helena, you know you’ll get to see the kind of music scene that best fits your style.

My tour was with Helena’s associate, Nico. What a fun, amazing evening. First was a duo singing and playing acoustics guitars, than we moved into the main ballroom where the duo was accompanied by a 9 piece orchestra. I am new to tango but Nico explained everything so well that now I feel like a tango expert!!

You simply will not get a better experience than going out with Helena! If you want the REAL deal, this is the person you go with. She runs her own milonga and is VERY well connected. Knows where all the locals go and is loved by all. Certainly our most memorable evening in BA.

I had the pleasure of experiencing several wonderful evenings with Helena as my guide, listening and dancing to two brilliant Tango ensembles and a remarkable Salsa Band (we were fortunate enough to be travelling during Carnival!) Helena has a deep passion and understanding of the Argentine music scene, and she can definitely hook you up to the best that the city has to offer. She has some pretty amazing restaurant recommendations as well, and took us to some local, off-the-beaten-path ~Clandestine~ restaurants. She's a delight! Highly recommend!!!

Being a big music lover, I wanted to experience the best of what makes the local scene unique but also expressed a desire to avoid the packaged tour shows. Helena is fully immersed in the tango scene and knows the best musicians and venues and was able to suss out what I was looking for, making suggestions until we arrived at a few ideas. She took me to a couple of places in Palermo Soho to show me the range of what the scene had to offer. Both were wonderful, but it was the Diego Schissi Quintet at an intimate jazz bar that really knocked me out. The first place we went to was more traditional, complete with a dance lesson beforehand and milonga afterward. The Schissi show was totally different and showed me some new and exciting directions that modern tango composition is taking.

Then, when she heard that I once played samba, she offered to take me to a hidden gem of a venue in Barracas that’s in its first months of operation but is one of the coolest places I’ve been to in my travels. Through her connections, she was able to arrange a surprise invitation for me to play with the samba band for their 10-minute finale. Talk about a personal touch! Helena is totally in the know, enthusiastic, and great fun. Highly recommended!

I hosted a group of 15 people from all over Latin America for a week, and thought it would be nice to arrange a tango event for them. My friend Helena, who runs Clandestino Music Tours, suggested one of her tours. I hadn't used her tours before, but I thought it would be great - in the end, it totally surpassed my expectations (which were already high!). She started by giving a talk to our group about the origins of tango, including fascinating information about the history of Buenos Aires - particularly the barrio of San Telmo. We then went to Maldita Milonga, a super cool venue in the heart of San Telmo. The group enjoyed a beginners tango class, followed by wine and empanadas, while we watched wonderful local dancers. Then the orquesta started, who were just brilliant. that was followed by an exhibition of exquisite tango and then a special treat - a Folkloric exhibition. After that, the crowd danced all night. Even my group, who had never danced tango, were invited to get up and dance - ieveryone agreed that t was a wonderful and memorable evening. I can't recommend Clandestino Music Tours enough. Helena is lovely and so knowledgeable. I will definitely be using her tours again!

We recently had the good fortune to enjoy a tango concert at a small intimate club in Buenos Aires. Although we don't speak Spanish, this did not stop us from enjoying the very infectious music. The musicians obviously enjoy working together and the audience was very appreciative. If you are intending on spending some time in Buenos Aires, I would recommend contacting Helena to see if she can arrange a musical tour for you.
Thanks so much to Helena for organizing this for us.

Helena's enthusiasm for tango music is truly infectious. She suggested the four of us meet her at a cozy venue with an orchestra made up of 12 well-known Buenos Aires musicians with a very appreciative audience. Helena explained the history of the music and the instruments, and guided us through the performance. We were thoroughly caught up in the dramatic music and felt the passion of songs even though we don't speak Spanish.
This is no tourist trap, we were the only tourists there and would never have found the place on our own. It was a privilege to have touched the authentic heartbeat of Buenos Aires. A very big thank you Helena!
