Traveling the route of the 7 lakes (which are not just 7, there are 10 if you go around a few times) is a very interesting experience and easy to do with any car. Starting from Villa la Angostura, on the Nahuel Huapi, you can first enjoy Lake Espejo, both from the route to Chile and on the 40, then the Correntoso, (I recommend that you go down a rather horrible dirt road to enjoy a little beach with cauquenes, bandurrias and ducks), then it is advisable to detour along a gravel road in good condition to enjoy Lake Traful. Back on 40, you will find Lake Villarino and then Faulkner, with a beautiful beach. Then you have to detour along a half-bad road to see Lago Hermoso, a must-see. Continue along the Mayónico, and once you reach San Martín you have to detour to see Lake Meliquina. Finally you find Lake Lácar in San Martin de los Andes. Everything is done in one day. Tip: take some sandwuichitos and a beer or a good malbec and have a picnic on the banks of the Traful.

Do not forget your camera. You'll stop at every mirador to view the fantastic scenery of the Seven Lakes road. It's good to bring water and a lunch box as there are not many places to stop for food unless you are in Villa la Angostura or San Martin de los Andes or Bariloche. We did this trip from San Martin de los Andes to Villa la Angostura. Try to do it on a calm day, not windy as the lakes look amazing when calm.

Rent a car and drive yourself! Make it a full day. Drive from Bariloche thru pampas, then slowly gain ground as enter the greenery and lakes. Views everywhere, take a break from driving to get pics and enjoy, Hikers and bikers share the road, all so pleasant. Be sure to visit the charming towns of Villa la Angostura and San Martin along Route 40, so beautiful, great little shops and markets.

It is a one-day trip, I went in summer, remember to bring water, the bathrooms are scarce, the tour is impressive, we did it with a tourism agency, El Refugio, the service was excellent, punctuality and friendliness all the time, especially by Ariel. I contracted the service from Buenos Aires before traveling and it was in installments, which greatly alleviated the payment. The bus in perfect condition and comfortable. It made me very sad to see how they are cutting down 200-year-old trees to enlarge the route to Villa Traful.

The drive is 110km and you pass through some truly picturesque scenery although, after the initial excitement, it does tend to become a bit samey. Some of the views from the miradors are really gorgeous. There are no towns or facilities along the way so make sure you pack supplies and have a full tank of petrol.

Must-do in the Bariloche area. Stay one night in San Martin de Los Andes and then take a full day driving slowly toward Bariloche. Numerous top-notch points of view, especially in the first-half of the trip.

We rented a car and did it on our own. Spectacular, something difficult to explain. Every meter an incredible view. The road was impeccable except for the last part to San Martín, check the weather before starting and don't do it too early because of the ice. First time driving in these conditions; With caution it is done very well.

Weather be with you, we mean good weather. The place is beautiful. Have a good day's rest before you embark on route 40. There are cycling and other road users. Hazardous drive means a constant eye out for danger. Get the other person to take photos while you concentrate on driving.

Ruta de los Siete Lagos - Rout of the Seven Lakes traces a winding path through an epic landscape of sweeping, multi hued forest, towering peaks and serene lakes. Touted as one of the most scenic drives in Argentina.
