Refugio Frey is a perfect destination for a hike from Bariloche. You can do it as a day hike if you are fit, but it's a really nice place to stay for the night. The vibe in the refuge is really nice, they offer delicious home-made meals, or you can use the kitchen and cook yourself. What I liked the most was the wooden deck by the lakeside, and the amazing and endless trad climbing possibilities in the granite spires that surround the valley.

Spending two weeks hiking in northern Patagonia, this was my favorite of all hikes. It is an all-day adventure so plan accordingly. There are two ways to do this hike: we started with the ski lift up from Bariloche, then hiked Catedral Ridge, then went down to the Frey Hut, and then a solid descent to the shores of Lake Gutierrez. I loved climbing over and around the boulders while on Catedral Ridge but you shouldn't do Catedral Ridge if you are scared of heights or subject to vertigo. The view was the most spectacular that I've seen. Then the scenery changed while hiking the valley to Frey Hut - lush green vs barren stones. The descent past Frey Hut was all wooded and shady so yet another type of scenery, and some relief from the afternoon sun. We ate our picnic lunch at a small lake as we hiked down Catedral Ridge towards the valley. We were able to refill our water bottles and use the restrooms at Frey Hut, and I bought a cold Coke. We had a guide but I think it could potentially be doable without a guide if you have a good sense of direction and at least a field guide.

Great hike with cool lake at the end-- last mile is pretty vertical but doable-- other than that besides the distance of 12 + miles it is pretty easy-- 2 very important points mi First it was 80 pesos for the bus each way-- significantly more than the previous reviews i had read and i understand it changes often-- you have to use SUBE card for bus Second-- the bus leaves from 2 different bis stops-- the following post was uber helpful for me so im passing it on "The buses at 7:15, 9:15, 11:15, 13:15, 15:15, 17:15, and 19:15 depart from Avenida Bustillo, opposite the National Park administration building. The buses at 8:15,10:15, 12:15, 14:15, 16:15, 18:15, and 20:15 depart from Avenida Pioneros, opposite bars Manush and Blest Cerveceria. Hope this helps some one else as well
