Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

This was a fascinating look at the world of mining, from the enormous size of the pit to the even bigger size of the trucks... it was all interesting. One point get a Tucson coupon book, and book ahead.

This was a very interesting and educational visit! There is a video theater, cactus garden, and a exhibit center. Standing at the edge of the open pit mine while on our bus tour of the mine, was an amazing site and very educational.

I have such mixed emotions giving this huge pit mining operation a terrific review, but if you live in this world you need and use copper. We learned so much about how copper is mined and refined from the visitors' center and from our tour...More

Our docent guide was new at this location but did a fine job of explaining how the overall mining operation works. The pit here is huge, 2 miles across and more than 2 miles long. Copper mining is big business in Arizona and we thought...More

Really enjoyed this tour. The tour guide was thorough. The mining and processing of copper is amazing not to mention our dependence on it. It is a definite stop on your visit to the southwest.

Very interesting to see how a mine operates. Tour guides know their stuff. Getting a piece of rock with some copper in it was a nice treat and souvenir to take home.

We found this place quite interesting. You get a tour in a van into the operating Mission Copper pit mine. Tour guide was informative. You get a sense of the scale of open pit mines and their challenges in balancing economic needs and environmental concerns....More

The tour is done quite well with minimal walking. A bus takes you to the mine overlook which involves very little walking indeed. Maybe a few yards at best. Next you stop at the processing plant. They have provided a nice... More
