We arrived too late to take the pickup truck tour, so we decided to take the hike. About 2 miles each way with a fair amount of uphill. We are both 64, fairly fit, and took 50 minutes to get there and 45 minutes to return. The trail itself is fairly wide, so the terrain is not as challenging as the elevation. About 1 mile in there is a short bridge crossing which is easy to miss. We missed it on the way there and wound up walking through deep mud. There was somewhere to wash your shoes at the falls but we only got rid of some of the mud. Did not see wildlife other than what appeared to be turkey vultures.

The Nauyaca Waterfall was absolutely fantastic. We chose the 8am jeep ride down in order to avoid the crowds and were so glad that we did because we had the falls to ourselves for the first half hour. We loved that you are allowed to swim up to the falls and jump off the rocks. Such a fun morning.

We drove ourselves to this location instead of going with a tour. You pay for parking and entrance at the main road and then drive about 2 km to the parking lot (straight down, eek!). There are bathrooms at the top and at the parking lot but nothing again until you go the 2 1/2 miles to the falls. The trail was challenging so if you're not in ok shape (I'm fluffy and made it...barely) you should pay for the truck to take you or ride a horse (for real, there are HORSES that you can ride to the falls!).

The beauty was immense. I wish we had brought a few more bottles of water as it was hot work walking all that way! We stayed at the falls for a bit and watched people jump and swim.

I highly recommend this!

About a 45m drive south of Quepos is this beautiful waterfall. You can visit and swim at both the upper and lower waterfalls, although the water is on the cold side, so just be prepared. The hike down is nice and we did spot some green-and-black poisonous dart frogs.
We paid for the ride to/from the waterfall drop-off. Couldn't imagine having to hike those steep hills from the pay station to the trailhead.

The waterfalls are astoundingly beautiful, would definitely recommend taking the time to visit this spot. I wanted to save some money so I paid around $10 to park and hiked in myself. The hike was longer than I expected but not very difficult, except for the fact that it was very hot the day I went. Once at the waterfall it was pretty crowded on the closest side to the entrance at the lower waterfall. But if you are able, I would make the effort to wade or swim over to the farther side. There was more sun on that side, you have a little more space, and getting in and out of the large pool was very easy.

There are two locations. I highly recommend this one as it was less expensive and a fantastic experience. We originally planned to hike in ($10), but I had an injured knee and we were running short on time so we decided to take the truck instead ($32). I’m so glad we did! I definitely recommend it even if you are fine hiking, just to save the time. You check in, then drive down a dirt road to a parking lot where there’s a bathroom. We were in a Rav 4 and had no problems. There were people in sedans, but it was the dry season. Wouldn’t recommend a sedan during the rainy season. Then the truck takes you down to a spot between the upper and lower falls where there are more bathrooms. The walk to the upper and lower falls is pretty easy.

The falls itself is absolutely beautiful-even in the dry season. The water at the lower falls is fun to swim in and the temperature is perfect. This company put up a rope to climb up and jump off the falls. They helped people climb up. It was great.

We reserved the truck pass that morning and then paid at the office when we got there.

Great morning at the falls - we took the economy 4WD option and didn’t regret missing a long uphill hike in the heat
The trucks take you from the car park or office to a short walk from both upper and lower falls.
Get there by 9am for the best photos before the crowds arrive
Take swimming gear for a refreshing swim under the falls in the lower pool.
Take beach shoes if you have them

Even we love hiking, we did the tour with 4x4 truck in the morning. So we were the first in the water. It was a great expirience.
We also climbed on some of the rocks.

It would be helpful to use water shoes

We decided to hike from the parking lot. It was 5 challenging miles in total. The hike there is uphill for the majority. We are in our low 40s and workout daily. There is a stopping spot with beverages for sale in middle. I would probably take the 4x4 vehicle option if I did it over again. Definitely worth the journey the waterfall is beautiful.

Note as you are planning your trip that there are two ways to enter Nauyaca Waterfalls. The one with the big colorful letters “Nauyaca” is the one closest to Dominical. If you are riding to the falls in the 4x4 truck (fun for all!), you can park right off the main road by the office. Make a reservation online before you go, and they will be waiting for you right on time. We were there during the rain, right after a heavy rain, and it was still so impressive, fun, and beautiful! Our family group of 8 were ages 12 to 78, and we fit on one truck together. We could not swim due to heavy current and water flow, but still fun. We stayed an hour— bathrooms available at the falls. Saw many vultures and blue butterflies on the drive there and back. Fun day!
