This was, without a doubt, the best experience I had at the lake. It’s totally different from the other activities available at San Pedro, and not one to be missed, where ever you’re staying on the lake. Led by the kindest and most talented women you can tailor the session to what you want - if you want to spend more time creating a larger piece like a scarf, no problem! If you’re short on time and want something smaller like a coaster or placemat, no problem! If you want to customise your weave into a purse, no problem! You can choose your material from a wide range of naturally dyed threads and the ladies take you through step by step the art that is Mayan weaving. You’ll struggle at first as it can be tricky but the ladies are patient and kind and help you whenever you are stuck, with decades of experience under their belts, they are experts at their craft. I can guarantee you’ll not have had an experience quite like this and you’ll be thrilled with whatever it is you chose to create. I can’t recommend this enough and it’s so vital to support this small, local business aimed at education and preserving traditional Mayan culture.

Myself and my girlfriend recently did a days weaving. We started at 10am and we’re greeted by the most lovely inspiring lady. She firstly showed us how the cotton is collected and then we had a go at winding it ourselves. Then we were able to weave our own scarves/purses/table clothes with whatever colours we liked! (All with help if needed). It was a completely new and amazing experience for us and I highly recommend anyone going to San Pedro to do it!!

As a single guy traveling alone, I haven’t the faintest idea how to weave anything. But these ladies changed my mind. They offer weaving classes for scarves and table runners and I chose to make a scarf. They let me pick out the colors and patters and we set to work. The entire family was there taking turns keeping an eagle eye if I made any mistakes and gently correcting.
Even though their English wasn’t too good, they were excellent teachers.
The entire process was about 6 hours (you can spilt into multiple days if you’d like). In the end, I have a scarf that I will truest treasure. For less than 40USD, this was totally worth it!
Also, the trip advisor map is wrong. Use google maps to find it- it’s on the main gringo street to the west of the docks about 3-4 minutes.

Lovely and patient teachers Anilady and Marta helped me make a beautiful scarf. It was a fun and rewarding experience. I appreciate the effort these ladies put into their handiwork even more now that I have tried it.

What a beautiful experience. I got to learn the traditional weaving process with Annalady, and Anita the owner was very kind and informative. They showed me the process from picking cotton, from spinning it and dyeing (you can take a natural dyes workshop as well, which I will probably do when I come back to Lake Atitlan), and then AnnaLady patiently showed me how to weave. It’s long and complicated, but I left with a beautiful organic cotton scarf as well as a great experience. Felt good knowing that I could contribute to the local community. As well, I now have a much better understanding of the amount of work that goes into traditional textile work (it is arduous!). Be aware when you are buying these products that a lot of work goes into the making of them, and think of what it would cost back home for a handmade (from beginning to end) textile product, and try to be fair. Thanks again Anita and AnnaLady for this eye-opening experience!

The scarf-making workshop I took was fantastic! I was able to choose my own colors and design, based on samples in the shop. My instructor was incredibly patient with me (and did a lot of the work for me when I got tired.) I was able to spread out the 8 hours over three days instead of two, without any difficulty. It would be helpful to speak some Spanish, but they know enough English that it would be possible without. Highly recommended! Would also recommend shopping there, even you can’t take the workshop — their products were beautiful!

It was a super experience. You learn more about the preparation and the process of weaving. You can choose your own colors and your own design, I really liked that. The teachers are friendly and are there to help you.You are then so proud of your work !

Wandering around San Pedro, I saw a sign advertising a weaving class. As an avid crafter, I thought this would be a memorable experience. Anita was very friendly to correspond with, and my teacher was fabulous. It took me eight hours, spread over two days, to finish weaving my scarf. My teacher was so helpful, guiding me through beginning it, and then continually checking in with me as I continued. The shop is a very friendly place, and everything they sell is gorgeous. I'm so happy I decided to take the weaving class, and I definitely recommend it to others.

I took a weaving workshop with two friends and we were all so incredibly impressed with the all-inclusive experience we got. We all got to take home a long, beautiful scarf that we had woven ourselves from cotton thread, and we got one-on-one help from the women there for every snagged thread. We even we're able to return the next day to finish our scarves when we weren't able to do so in one day; it was a very flexible schedule. I cannot recommend a workshop here more, and if nothing else, drop by to see the gorgeous scarves, bags, blankets, and everything else! Thank you especially to Anita and Olga for their very attentive help and attention to detail, despite the language barrier!
