So for years (Approximately 8 years) we have been going to Canyon lake Marina and campground. annually. This year was a bit of a disappointment. Of course the views are fabulous and majority of the campers are very neighborly. So this year we decided that we would allow our adult children (17 and18 years old) and there friends to camp on there own. We rented three tent sites and 1 Rv site. The boys and their friends had the two tent sites. (A total of 11 young men). A complaint was called in to security for cursing. No loud music. Not being rowdy. But for cursing. Security issued the young men a verbal warning.
The following morning approximately 6:30AM security arrived again not because they were called but to reiterate there was a complaint the previous night. Later that morning 11:30 noonish. Security arrived again stating another complaint of cursing. While they were I. The lake on a large raft
Immediately they were ask to leave and that they had 30 minutes to pack and leave to campsites under threat of arrest. Not at any time we’re any of these young men disrespectful to the staff or any one in particular.
After hearing what had happened my wife and I went to the office to see what if anything could be done. While attempting to simply ask what coresponded, the gentleman that had told the young men to leave interrupted abruptly and said “they are gone cannot stay” needless to say we will not be returning to this campground. Simply because of the staff I am not sure if mgt has changed or if the few we attempted to speak with were having a bad day/weekend but it was enough fo us to find a new annual camping ground simply because the staff/management are extremely rude and condescending.

This is a nice man made lake close to Metropolitan Pheonix. Lots of public access though you will need to buy a $8 Forest pass to park. Boating, fishing camping and picnicking are the main activities. Not crowded on the Saturday I was there. The Marina has rental boats, a restaurant and a lake tour boat. The staff is super friendly. They got knocked down a point duets the por condition of the kayak I rented. The seat was so bad itwas basically unusable. Other than that it was a great experience. A bonus is that it is on the very scenic Apache Trail.

Long beautiful trip to Canyon Lake but well worth it. Took the 90 minute boat tour around the lake. It was a lot of fun with great scenery and lots of information. Was able to see around 20 sheep along the way. Pictures cannot capture Canyon Lakes Beauty. The ever changing sky makes the colors change as you travel around the lake. They do have campgrounds and a marina if you are so inclined. If you are just passing thru take the boat trip it made our day!!

See this lake it's gorgeous, the road to get here is very scenic and winding.
7 years ago saw big horn sheep in the hills so lookout for that.
After the lake keep going to Tortilla Flats a cool old stagecoach stop where you will find a saloon and shops!

Nestled in the mountains this beautiful lake is a site to behold. This is a beautiful spot for pictures with many different spots to stop and take photos. The mountains in the back ground make the scene even more stunning. A must see

We stopped at the lake a few years ago on our annual Arizona trip. We thought it looked pretty neat, so this year we decided to rent a pontoon for a while. Man were we glad we did! What a cool lake with great sights and lots of wild life! We definitely will be back! We haven’t taken the boat tour may need to do that in the coming years.

Beautiful lake, cool waters, not to busy during the week, and plenty of areas to explore, especially if you're on a kayak. The fun drive to the lake is an added bonus. The ducks like to socialize if they see you.

Very nice lake. The water is very cold in winter but that is to be expected. It’s nice and clear. Great for kayaking and boating. I’m sure if you go in May, the water feels amazing. It has a nice picnic area and ample parking in different areas. The drive is through a long winding road where the speed limit is from 25-15.

Canyon Lake and the drive there is worth at least a day long visit. Fresh water and great cliffs, mountain scenery and only 35 miles from Mesa (but figure at least an hour for this scenic drive) There is a marina to launch your boat or rent motorized boats, canoes 🛶 or take the Dolly Steamboat tour. The 2 hour excursion is well worth every penny. I’m taking more friend when I re-visit AZ again this winter.

We didn't do much more than stop a few times and take photos... but this area is absolutely gorgeous! I want to go back when it's warmer to get out on the lake. But the drive there is the real treat! We drove all the way to Tortilla Flats. Such a beautiful drive. Awesome!

Yes it is. There is a marina with docks and a boat launch. There is also some shore line but don't know if you have to pay to use the shore line or if it is for free public use.

NO - don't take the chance and just show up! That is what we did and we almost did not make it on! They only had 5 tickets left and I was lucky enough to get two. All the other people had reservations.

how far a drive from Catalina, AZ to Canyon Lake, in miles/hours?
Written May 21, 2017
Not sure, but is about 17 miles from Apache Junction.
Written May 23, 2017
I'm not sure on cost as my in-laws paid for the boat rental. I know you pay for the boat regardless of how many people. I think it's at least $200 for about 4-5 hours. But I'm sure there's a rental website somewhere with more exact pricing information.
