Drove by this jewel many times and finally stopped. This is where the upside down river shows itself. In the high Sonoran Desert, there is a place where the subterranean river is forced to the surface of the parched earth, a fragile riparian zone: an...More

What was formerly run by the Nature Conservancy is now run by Maricopa county. This preserve has many easy trails to navigate. All are easy to walk although trekking up to Lykes Lookout is a bit of an uphill climb. We heard more birds then...More

Recently took a short drive out of the west Phoenix valley to visit the reserve. At $5 per adult, kids free, it was fun little adventure. Much of the paths are short and very well marked and shaded! I believe a jogging stroller would do...More

Oh My Goodness!!! For our visit my parents schedule one of the special evening walks. It was great to see some of the nocturnal world. Be sure to wear good (!!!) walking shoes and that you are able to walk on an uneven pathway. The...More

A little hard to find, well staffed preserve with short easy shaded walking paths around a pond and near a little water in the river bed, lots of birds, and nice visitor center. Nothing spectacular, but pleasant. There is another stretch of the Hassayampa River...More

Experienced a nature walk tour. Very interesting! The tour guide is extremely knowledgeable. Saw lots of gorgeous hummingbirds and other types of birds. Loved the tour!

Enjoyed walking the trails and identifying the various birds that were in the area. Shady areas where you can sit and enjoy yourself.

We spent the morning at the Hassayampa preserve exploring the trails. Wildlife sightings are pretty common here. We saw lizards and quite a few birds including multiple Vermillion Flycatchers and Phainopeplas which are both common here. There are also feeders in front of the house...More

We were lucky that it was only in the 80s the day we chose to hike through the preserve. Still very hot in the sunny stretches, overall a good percentage of the trails are shaded. Most of the trails are flat but can be sandy...More

I enjoyed going, but the day I was there it was 96 degrees. I simply did not have the energy to walk all the trails. Both the river and the lake were a bit of a disappointment, but I admit, it might have been better...More

Not on this river in the summer. The translation of Hassayampa is 'the river that flows under the ground". During our visit, the entire river was a dry bed. We were told that only during flood season does it have water.
